Summary: L-asparaginase (LA) is an antileukemic biopharmaceutical of current high-cost. To overcome such age related society diseases, it is however crucial to optimize the production and purification of biopharmaceuticals to allow their routinely use by a widespread population. In this context, NanoPurAsp aims to develop novel sustainable technologies to produce and purify LA. Improvements in the upstream process will be attempted by using a novel recombinant LA to replace the usual bacteria that activate the immunological system, and thus with side effects. Since the LA purification step typically uses high expensive and time-consuming methods, NanoPurAsp also comprises improvements in the downstream processing, for which reusable functionalised nanomaterials will be used. This project envisages the manufacturing of LA of high therapeutic efficacy and at a lower cost, accounting with the know-how of research members from 3 institutions, UNESP from Brazil, and CICECO and FEUP from Portugal.
