Details
Summary: European Union defined targets for each Member State regarding climate and energy. Microalgae are considered a promising and sustainable source of energy, due to their biomass productivity and ability to capture CO2. The use of wastewater as microalgal culture medium will reduce the requirements of nutrients and freshwater, reducing its cost and environmental impact. Along this project two major goals will be explored: (a) to simulate and optimize new design configurations of photobioreactors (PBRs); (b) to assess the sustainability improvement of different industrial processes by integrating microalgal culture to treat their effluents. Specific objectives are: (a) to assess and compare microalgal growth with the existing (tubular, air-lift and flat-plate) and two new design configurations of PBRs with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools, studying hydrodynamics, heat and mass transfer, microalgal cell trajectories and light dynamics; (b) to construct a new pilot plant based on the CFD results (proof-of-concept); (c) to evaluate microalgal growth with simulated gaseous and liquid industrial effluents; (d) to estimate the process sustainability improvement by the application of this technology.
