Apresentação Pessoal

Carlos M. Correia, PhD

My career has been largely dedicated to Enabling disruptive high-angular resolution observations with ground-based VIS/NIR telescopes, both in Portugal and abroad in international, collaborative, large-scale programmes. Over the years I developed know-how in optics, sensors and instrumentation for imaging, spectroscopy and interferometry.

I am currently a FCT-CEEC researcher with the Centre for Astrophysics and Gravitation.

An overview of my expertise follows:

  • Scientific (as of March 2025)
    • Adaptive optics scientist: wave-front sensing, wave propagation, large-scale inverse problems, optics, dynamic control, signal processing
    • Supervision: supervised and co-supervised 6 post-docs, 3 PhD and 8+ MSc students
  • Pedagogic
    • Communication: I regularly taught lectures in physics (electromagnetism, wave propagation), sensors and advanced instrumentation
    • Outreach: ESERO regular speaker, ERASMUS+ grantee, short documentaty co-director
  • Management
    • managerial activity in large international consortia
      • 2025 – now: Portuguese representative @EII: European Interferometry Initiative
      • 2025 – now: Scientific coordinator of CENTRA branch @ FEUP
      • 2019 – now: Member of the Comité de Suivi Individuel @ AMU
      • 2016-2019: manager H2020-OPTICON WP10,
      • 2018-2019: Partenarial Herbert Curien
      • 2016 – 2019 LAM scientific council
      • 2017 – 2019: ATER selection committees
    • Fundraising: I have a long-standing fundraising profile. Since 2004 I have applied to funding to become Research Assistant at ESO, PhD student at ONERA, as a Marie Curie Fellow and then as a Chaire d’Excellence of the AMU
