Luis Almeida received his PhD from the University of Aveiro, Portugal, in 1999. He has been actively engaged in many different facets of real-time teaching and research, including scheduling, networking, embedded systems, industrial systems, and robotics. Currently, he is an associate professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of the University of Porto, and a member of the Institute of Telecommunications where he coordinates the Networked Systems group and within it, the Distributed and Real-Time Embedded Systems laboratory. His current interests are in real-time communication protocols for embedded systems and wireless communication and middleware for teams of cooperative autonomous agents. He is a co-author of more than 250 refereed publications in international scientific conferences and journals (7 with awards), co-author of 4 patents and 10 book chapters, and Principal Investigator, local coordinator or participant in over 15 funded national and international research projects.
Since 2000 he has participated in over 100 Program Committees and over 50 Organizing Committees of events in Real-Time Systems (RTSS, ECRTS, RTAS, RTCSA, DATE, …), Embedded Systems (EMSOFT, ICESS, SAC, …) Industrial Systems (ETFA, WFCS, SIES, INDIN, …) and Robotics (ROBOCUP, ICARSC, …). In particular, he was Program Chair of RTSS 2011, General Chair of RTSS 2012, RTSS Student Competition Chair 2006-2009, DATE Topic Chair 2009-2011, ETFA Track Chair in 2005 and 2007, Program Chair of RoboCup Symposium 2015 and ICARSC 2015.
He was a member of the Executive Board of the IEEE TC on Real-Time Systems from 2008 to 2012. He is a member of the IFIP WG on Embedded Systems since 2007 and Vice-Chair of the Strategic Management Board of the EDAA SIG on Embedded Systems Design (EMSIG) since 2012. In the field of Robotics, he was Vice-President of the RoboCup Federation from 2011 to 2013, being a member of the Board of Trustees since 2008, and he was Secretary and Vice-President of the Portuguese Robotics Society from 2007 to 2010.
Luis Almeida is also an Associate Editor of the Journal on Real-Time Systems, Springer, and of the Journal of Systems Architecture, Elsevier. He was the founder and first President of the Alumni Association of the University of Aveiro, where he is honorary member. He was also founder of the first IEEE Student Branch in Portugal, in 1987, and founder of the first Robotics Student Competitions in Portugal in 1995.
