Current position: President & CEO of BERD – Bridge, Engineering, Research and Design; Invited Teacher at Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP). 

Academic education: Graduate in Civil Engineering at FEUP (1991);Master Degree in Civil Engineering at FEUP (1993);PhD in Civil Engineering, Structures, by FEUP (1999).

Main reasearch interests/skills: Bridge Engineering; Bridge Design; Bridge Construction Methods; Optimization of bridge construction processes; Organic Prestressing System; Modular Bridges; Bridge Engineering Intelligence.

Main activities developed: Responsible for the research programs OPS1, OPS2 and OPS3;Supervision of several Master Thesis and of one Doctoral Thesis (concluded) and 2 ongoing; Responsible for the creation of BERD, which R&D department includes the previous OPS research team; Responsible for the creation of MBS, BERD's Modular Bridge Unit; Responsible for the Cooperation Project B.E.I.S.; Chairman of “Multi-Span Large Bridges” Conference; Member of several Scientific Committees of International Conferences; Invited Reviewer of Journal of Bridge Engineering (ASCE); Structural Enginering International (IABSE); among others; Chairman of BERD-FEUP Wibe Prize. Editor of the Book “MULTI-SPAN LARGE BRIDGES”, with the proceedings of the Conference under the same name; Author os more than 80 articles, of which 10 in international specialty magazines; Author of the following patents: Construction Process of Structures with Empty Segments and Construction System of Structures with Empty Segments; Complex III modular bridge; Cross Section Patent; Hybrid Large Span construction system with precast segments and method of hybrid construction of large span bridge with precast segments; Auto-adjustable prestressing, Gantry with auto adjustable prestressing, the last of which has been examined and approved in more than 60 countries.

Other relevant information: Founder and President of BERD, spin-off of FEUP, created in 2006; Participated in various ways in projects/consultancy/solutions of more than 250 bridges, of different types, in five continent. As a researcher and promoter of innovation, Winner of several national and international awards and distinctions, including FIB's distinction in Berlin 2001, for one of the two best theses in structures worldwide. In terms of Management and Innovation BERD received multiple distinctions and national and international awards, from the distinction of PTI (USA) to Cotec Innovation Prize, among others. BERD designed and supplied in 2015 the largest movable scaffolding system worldwide, for multiple in situ spans.
