MARIA ANTÓNIA CARRAVILLA is Associate Professor and Director of the Doctoral Program in Industrial Engineering and Management at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), and Senior Researcher and project leader at the Industrial Engineering and Management Center at INESC TEC.

 

She is also a lecturer at the Porto Business School of the University of Porto, in the MBA and Executive MBA programs and has been, for several years, Visiting Professor of the University of São Paulo (USP).

 

In FEUP, she was also Vice-chairman of the Board of Regents and is Member of the Scientific Board and member of the Department Council of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management, member of the Scientific Council of INESC TEC and of the Academic Council of Porto Business School. She is also a member of the board of APDIO (Portuguese Association of Operations Research), acting as Treasurer.

 

She completed in FEUP the Habilitation in Industrial Engineering and Management in 2010 with a lesson on Constraint Programming to solve Nesting Problems, the PhD in Electrical and Computers Engineering in 1996, with a thesis in Hierarchical Production Planning, the MSc in Electrical and Computers Engineering in 1991 with a thesis in Digital Controllers and the BSc in Electrical Engineering in 1984 in Power Systems.

 

Her main scientific activity is in Operations Research and Management Science and most of her research was driven by the needs of industry, services and public administration. The efficient use of resources was her main driver when addressing integrated production problems: I.e. logistics, vehicle routing problems and production planning involving mostly cutting and packing. In the transportation area she has also been actively working in shared mobility systems where the integration of pricing and capacity planning decisions has been approached, under a revenue management framework. From the techniques point of view her research is centered in the use and development of Metaheuristic approaches and their hybridization with Mathematical Programming based methods.

 

She was responsible for several R&D contracts in the area of Operational Research with industry, services and public administration. The results of these contracts, both in the form of decision support systems or analysis reports, proved to be very relevant for these organisations, generating long-term collaborative relationships with FEUP. Pure research contracts were mostly financed by FCT in Portugal, but also by the European Union, FAPESP and CAPES in Brazil and by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Education. These contracts were the basis for the doctoral theses of students who have already completed this degree under her supervision, two of them as a "sandwich" doctorate with Brazilian universities. This R&D work resulted in several journal articles, as well as communications at international congresses and conferences in the area of Operational Research.

 

In the area of Education and Management of Education Institutions, she participated in a working group Appointed by the Ministry of Education that developed the Evaluation of Primary and Secondary Schools in Portugal, she was a member of the evaluation panel for Output Indicators in Polytechnic Higher Education and, more recently, she was a researcher in a project to build an Education Observatory in Portugal, a database of the Portuguese Education System and the effects of public policies in education.

She was a member of FEUP's executive committee as Pro-Director for Management and Control. In the scope of this activity, she applied intensively Operational Research tools to the management of Higher Education Institutions, having led several studies related to indicators for Higher Education Institutions.

She was the Director of the Financial Services and head of the Management Office of FEUP, and was responsible for the projects that resulted in the implementation in FEUP of the core workflows related with the Financial Services, that are now used within the whole University of Porto. She has also been responsible for the Jupiter Project supervising and organising the move of FEUP to the Asprela premises.

As part of her responsibilities in the Management Office she developed models to support decision making in Higher Education Institutions, including the evaluation of the workload of the teaching staff, the International Benchmarking of Higher Education Institutions and their sustainability. She also supervised a MSc dissertation and co-authored a journal article on sustainability of Higher Education Institutions.

 

She was responsible for courses related to Operational Research, Operations Management and Logistics at the BSc, MSc and PhD levels. She supervised a large number of master's theses both in the industrial environment and in the academy. In the scope of the teaching activity, she led several pedagogical projects whose results have been disseminated in congresses, conferences and workshops (more than a dozen communications), and in invited lectures in several higher education institutions in Portugal and Brazil.

Since 2010 she organises streams dedicated to teaching and learning in international conferences in the area of Operational Research and also in the conference of the Portuguese Association of Operational Research.

She received the prize for Pedagogical Excellence, with which FEUP honours her best teacher in the previous 5 years, the first time this prize was awarded by FEUP.
