Paulo Portugal received the Licentiate (5-year degree), MSc and PhD degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Porto, in 1992, 1995 and 2005, respectively. Currently, he is Associate Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Porto, Portugal, and a researcher at SYSTEC.
He is author or co-author of more than 140 technical papers in the areas of industrial communication systems, communication networks for embedded systems and dependability modeling and evaluation of safety-critical systems. He supervised or co-supervised 9 PhD and more than 75 Master thesis.
He received 4 international Best paper awards in conferences and journals.
He is a member of several technical committees, in particular the Industrial Communications Systems (ICS) and the Fault Tolerant and Dependable Systems (SFTDS) Subcommittees of the Technical Committee on Factory Automation (TCFA) of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES).
He has been actively involved in the organization of conferences for the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES), specifically: ETFA, INDIN, and WFCS.
He has a teaching experience of more than 30 courses, covering subjects such as: industrial automation, industrial communications systems, discrete event systems modeling, safety-critical systems, instrumentation and electronics.
