Present position: Full professor at the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Aveiro, since 2005; Member of the National Committees of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), since 2009; Vice-President of Portuguese Society of Seismic Engineering (SPES); Member of the Organising  Committee and the Scientific Committee of the 15WCEE.

- Education: He holds a PhD and the aggregate both in Civil Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering University of Porto. He concluded a degree in Civil Engineering, from the Faculty of Engineering University of Porto, Portugal.

- Administrative and Management Activities: Member of the National Committee of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), since 2009 and Vice-President of Portuguese Society of Seismic Engineering (SPES), since 2005.

- Industrial collaborations: He has working experience in collaboration with industry in structural design, structural defects survey and retrofitting design for existing structures. Moreover, as a result of collaboration with national official entities, he is author of more than 400 technical reports and opinion letters during consultancy activity performed by FEUP, namely by the Nucleus for Conservation and Rehabilitation of Built Heritage.

- Scientific Guidance: Supervisor or co-supervisor of 10 PhD theses concluded (more 6 PhD theses in progress) and 50 MSc theses concluded.

- Projects: He is involved in 4 national projects funded by FCT: Development and calibration of seismic safety assessment methodologies for existing buildings according to the Eurocode 8-Part 3; Field Experimental Characterization of Stone Masonry Constructions under Earthquake Actions; Structural assessment and strengthening of reinforced concrete columns under horizontal bi-axial cyclic loading; Seismic performance assessment of reinforced concrete buildings designed to Portuguese codes, SPARCS.

- Publications: Author of 48 international and national book chapters, 46 papers published in international refereed journals, 26 papers published in national refereed journals and more than 300 papers published in international and national conferences.

- Other Scientific Activities: Director of the Nucleus for Conservation and Rehabilitation of Built Heritage at FEUP. Organizer of several national and international conferences, as the 7^th and 8^th National Conference on Seismology and Earthquake Engineering (2007, 2010) or the International Seminar on Seismic Risk and Rehabilitation of Stone Masonry Housing (2008).
