Environmental Engineering is reported as in the top 5 of the Future Engineering professions3 (TOPUNIVERSITIES. Rankings), has a transversal dimension and is expected to be more actively present in projects and interventions in society as part of an ecosystem.
The main objective of L.EA is to provide excellent training in the basic sciences that underpin Environmental Engineering, namely in the basic scientific areas (physical sciences, natural sciences, earth sciences and environmental sciences) and in the technological sciences common to the engineering study cycles (such as transport phenomena – fluid mechanics and heat and mass transfer - and unit operations applied to environmental engineering laboratories) and specific to the environmental field, complemented by management knowledge (decision methods, environmental decision tools and planning).
L.EA allows to acquire skills that underpin a thorough education in Environmental Engineering.
The knowledge acquired in L.EA allows the acquisition of skills that can be applied in the formulation, resolution and discussion of environmental problems and those acquired in the technological and engineering sciences in a preliminary development of solutions to environmental problems and in the anticipation of those problems, including potential perverse effects at any environmental compartment (water, air, soil).
The knowledge in environmental management will allow preliminary support to project development, environmental assessment studies and to the implementation and operation of environmental systems in several activities, of industrial, urban or commercial nature.
L.EA allows to obtain the competences which are the foudation to fully practice the profession of an Environmental Engineer.
Environmental Engineers perform various functions in industries, companies of different fields or dedicated to the environment as well as in municipal services and governmental agencies, in areas such as:
Employability
The new study cycles in Environmental Engineering should follow the trend of employability indicators from MIEA.
The employability rate of MIEA in 2019/20 was 90%.
The data of employability correspond to an inquire of FEUP made in 2021 and relate to the graduates of MIEA from 2019/2020 (1st job after graduation); 74% of the graduates responded to the questionnaire.
Colaboration with Companies and Research
The connection with the business network is one of the greatest strengths of the trainning in Environmental Engineering at FEUP, traditionally with more emphasis at the Master.
With the revision of the courses structure this collaboration is now reinforced at the Bachelor, namely but not exclusively through the Curricular Unit Capstone Project.
Cooperation with companies goes beyond, being extended to students training, namely in consultancy studies and R&D projects.
The following list presents the companies that have collaborated or collaborate in the Environmental Engineering field at FEUP according to the are that the collaboration is essentially conducted:
