Master in Occupational Safety and Hygiene Engineering

Course:

The study plan comprises a teaching component of 90 ECTS and a dissertation with 30 ECTS in two main areas:

-Technology

-Safety and Emergency

The Master degree is obtained after dissertation's approval in one of the two areas and allows apply for the Professional Competencies Certificate (PCC) in Occupational Safety and Health to the Portuguese Authority for Working Conditions (ACT).

Main Goal:

The Master course in Occupational Safety and Hygiene Engineering aims:

  • Training top level professionals, holders of the qualifications and skills needed to develop, coordinate and control the activities of prevention and protection against occupational risks in the different sectors of economic activity.

Admission Requirements:

The application is allowed to graduates from any academic area. It is, however, made a curricular analysis case by case, to verify the suitability of scientific preparation. It may be required to attendance in an interview.

Timetable:

Please note that MESHO's timetable tend to be after work (Monday to Friday from 18:00 to 22:00h) except for optional course units which, being of candidate choice, may be in daytime. Are also planned some classes on Saturday mornings.

Optional Curricular Units:

The student can choose between  optional curricular units (CU) according to the following criteria:

Technology 

1st year

Get approved to:
minimum of 24 credits and maximum of 26,5 credits
minimum of 0 credits and maximum of 18 credits of the 2nd cycle of the University of Porto

2nd year

Get approved to:
minimum of 12 credits and a maximum of 14.5 credits
minimum of 0 credits and maximum of 12 credits of the 2nd cycle of the University of Porto

Safety and Emergency 

1st Year
Get approved to:

minimum of 24 credits and maximum of 26,5 credits
minimum of 0 credits and maximum of 12 credits of the 2nd cycle of the University of Porto

2nd Year
Get approved to:

minimum of 12 credits and maximum of 12 credits

Course syllabus

 


Objectives

The MESHO is a multidisciplinary study programme,focused on engineering approaches,but with contributions from other areas of knowledge such as psychology and health sciences.The defined objectives are:
•Instruct specialised professionals,with the proper skills and with the necessary professional
competencies to develop, coordinate and manage prevention and protection activities against
occupational risks in different economic activity sectors;
•Contribute to the development of R&D activities within a technical and scientific multidisciplinary area whilst simultaneously socially sensitive;
•To place FEUP as the national leader in a rapidly developing area of knowledge, at a national level, thus contributing to Portugal’s international visibility in this field.
To achieve these goals, the MESHO is structured in two branches: technology and safety and emergency.
It has a curricular structure with 48 ECTS of mandatory course units (CU), 30ECTS of optional CUs and 42 for the Dissertation.

Professional Abilities

By the end of the Masters, students should be able to proficiently correspond to scientific and professional goals, such as:
1. Cooperate in the definition of the company’s general policy in what concerns risk prevention, and to plan and implement the correspondent management system;
2. To develop professional risk assessment procedures;
3. To conceive, programme, develop, manage and evaluate prevention and protection measures;
4. To technically coordinate the activities within the scope of health and safety at work, ensuring the insertion and technical orientation of the professionals in the area of security and hygiene at work;
5. To participate in the organisation of work in design, construction and fruition phases;
6. To manage the process of external resources usage in prevention and protection activities;
7. To ensure the organisation of the necessary documentation for company prevention management;
8. Promote information and training for workers and other members in the workplace;
9. To promote the integration of prevention in the companies’ communication systems, preparing and providing the necessary specific information;
10. Dynamize the processes of consultation and participation of workers;
11. Develop business relations with prevention network agencies.
The confirmation of the operationalisation of objectives and its degree of compliance is done by evaluating the technical and scientific skills of students in the different curricular units, including the dissertation.

Information

Information

Candidates with courses lasting more than three years wishing equivalence must, at the end of the application form, check "yes" and attaching the certificates, content and working hours of the CU made in their course and for which claim equivalence.

Vacancies:

Master Course: 50 places available (1st and 2nd year. Of these, 20 are for holders of PCC in OSH).

  • Phase 1 - 30 places (1st and 2nd years. Of these, 15 are for holders of CCP in OHS).
  • Phase 2 - 15 places (1st and 2nd years. Of these, 5 are for holders of CCP in OHS) + leftover vacancies of the 1st phase, if any.

The minimum number of registrations for the Master's functioning  is 20 (twenty).

Entry Requirements:
According to Article No. 8, may apply for access to the study cycle leading to a master’s degree:
a) Holders of a Bachelor’s degree or legal equivalent;
b) Holders of a foreign Higher Education degree conferred following a first cycle of studies organised
according to the principles of the Bologna Process by an adherent State;
c) Holders of a foreign Higher Education degree recognised as fulfilling the objectives of a first degree by
the competent scientific body of the Higher Education institution they are applying to;
d) Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognised as attesting to the
applicant’s ability to attend this study cycle by the competent scientific body of the Higher Education
institution they are applying to.

Ranking Criteria

The ranking criteria are defined per cycle of studies (see information for each cycle of studies).

Notes:
1- In the 1st and 2nd phases, only applicants with a ranking grade equal to, or higher than, 14 (out of 20) will be admitted, and they must provide supporting documents attesting that they have completed the necessary qualifications to apply*.
For ranking purposes, the scientific committee of the cycle of studies may determine a higher application grade than the one mentioned above.
Application Grade: The result obtained by using the calculation formula provided for in the ranking criteria and method.

2 – In the 3rd phase, applicants who have completed or are expected to complete the cycle of studies by the end of the application deadline* will be accepted for ranking. If applicants do not have a graduation certificate yet, they must present a declaration of honour stating that they have completed the necessary qualifications to apply.
Enrolment will be subject to the presentation of the corresponding certificate.

* Except for cycles of studies which have other admission conditions to operate.


Documents Required

  • ID document (ID Card / Citizen Card / Passport) or declaration containing the identification data (mandatory);
  • Graduation certificate regarding a higher education degree (mandatory);
    - In the 3rd phase and subsequent phases for application, if you have already graduated but do not have the corresponding certificate yet, you must submit a declaration indicating the completion date and the final grade you expect to obtain, and your enrolment will be subject to the presentation of the corresponding certificate within the deadlines indicated; 
    - For qualifications obtained abroad see note (1) below;
  • Certificate of the higher education institution listing the curricular units in which you got a passing grade, indicating the regime (semester/year) and the number of credit units/ECTS. (mandatory);
    - Enrolment will be subject to the presentation of the corresponding certificate within the deadlines indicated;
    - UP students are only required to scan and attach the information included in their “Percurso Académico” (Academic Path);
    - For qualifications obtained abroad see note (1) below;
  • Curriculum vitae (mandatory);
  • Letters of recommendation;
  • Photo (optional).

(1) Notes for applicants from foreign higher education:

Documents must be authenticated by consular offices or embassies of Portugal located in the country where the qualification was obtained or hold the Hague Apostille (for countries that acceded to the Hague Convention). The same applies to the translations (mandatory) of documents whose original language is not Portuguese, Spanish, French or English.

In addition to these, you may be required to present other documents depending on the cycle of studies you are applying for (information available in the application process).

Documents can be submitted unauthenticated in the application stage. However, admitted applicants who have any pending document in their application process (e.g. unauthenticated certificates) will only be able to enrol after they deliver/send the said document.

Fees

Application is subject to the payment of a non-refundable fee of 55 euros.

Procedure to generate ATM references:
1. Click on the button Associar referência MB para pagamento next to the application fee.
2. Confirm the data displayed and click "Atribuir" (Assign) and the associated reference will be automatically generated (note: It may take a while to generate ATM references).
3. Click "Voltar à conta corrente" (Back to current account) to see the reference generated.

Payments from abroad must be made by bank transfer, at payer’s expenses, using the information in the attached document.
Then, you must send proof of the bank transfer to acesso.ingresso@fe.up.pt, with the following data: 
- Name, address, country, tax identification number.

Notes:
- After the deadline for submitting applications, applicants have 5 additional days to ensure the payment of the corresponding fee, which is required for the application to become effective. After this deadline, any applications regarding which fees have not been paid will be rejected outright.
- Applicants who have been excluded or not admitted (non-placed applicants) in one phase, and who wish to apply for another phase, must submit a new application and pay the corresponding fees.

Procedures

Procedure for submission of application

  1. Choose the intended cycle of studies/course and access regime (Applications).
  2. Select "Apresentar a candidatura" (Submit application). If you are already a student at FEUP, you will have to log in using your student’s username and password. If you are not a student at FEUP, you will be asked to complete a user registration form. The credentials (username and password) will be sent to the email address you specify on that form.
  3. Fill in the application form and attach the requested documents. Please note that fields in red are mandatory.
  4. Submit your application. If an error is detected (e.g. mandatory fields left blank), the system displays an alert message.
    If the information is successfully submitted, you must check all data entered and either confirm or edit the data.
  5. After confirmation of your application submission you will see information regarding the payment of the corresponding fee with ATM references. For payments made from abroad, please check the information available in the Fees section (see above).
  6. If you have encountered any problems while submitting your application, you must report them to acesso.ingresso@fe.up.pt during the application submission period or on the working day following the deadline for submission.

Procedure for checking the status of your application

  1. Log into the information system with the username and password that you used in your application;
  2. Click on your name;
  3. Select the academic year of the application(s) you submitted;
  4. In the options that appear on the right hand side of the page, select "Candidaturas de Ingresso" (Applications).

Procedure to request credit transfer/recognition

  1. In the field "You want to make a request for recognition" of the application form, select "Yes".
  2. After submitting your application, in the options on the right hand side of the page, under "Reconhecimentos" (Credit transfer), select "Criar/Editar" (Create/Edit) and enter the request.
  3. Credit transfer/recognition request (optional) is subject to the non-refundable payment of the fees set-out in the UP table of fees and Order No. 7/2016 of the Dean of FEUP.

Procedure for enrolment
This procedure will be available through a link on the homepage of FEUP at the beginning of the enrolment period.
