Master in Electrical and Computers Engineering

The Integrated Master in Electrical and Computer Engineering has been awarded the international EUR-ACE quality label. This certifies MIEEC as a high-quality programme which meets the international standards for professional engineering education at the masters level. [+ info]

The Master Course in Electrical and Computer Engineering at FEUP offers a combination of underlying and specialized knowledge, which is something that FEUP offers a long time ago in Undergraduate and Master courses, namely the Master Courses in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Telecommunication Services and Networks and Multimedia Systems.

- This program lasts five years for students who are initiating their academic career. It is organized in three major training areas- Energy, Automation and Telecommunications, and each of these areas comprise a specialisation, so that students can broaden their knowledge. It will be awarded an undergraduate diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering Sciences after the completion of the first three years of the course.

-This program offers a 2nd cycle of studies, which lasts two years to students with a Bachelor’s Degree. It comprises a wide range of specializations, such as: Communication Services and Networks, Multimedia Communication, Optical Communications, Microelectronics, Signal, Audio and Video Processing, Industrial Management, Industrial Informatics, Industrial Electronics and Instrumentation, Robotics, Energy Networks and Markets, Electrical Installations and Renewable Energies.

- FEUP offers from 2007/2008 on a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering to students with a Masters Degree who want to continue their academic career. The Portuguese government and FEUP have established cooperation agreements with American Universities: Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Carnegie-Mellon University and University of Texas at Austin.

The Master Course in Electrical and Computer Engineering establishes the concept of integrated study cycle, awarding students with a Masters Degree. It complies with the guidelines of Lei de Bases do Ensino Superior (Portuguese laws which regulate the education system), combining the most relevant characteristics of FEUP’s most important courses in this area: Bachelor in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Masters in Electrical and Computer Engineering.

This Master Course comprises aspects of both of the above mentioned courses. From the first, it includes the aspects of a solid and broad scientific training in the fundamental areas of Electrical and Computer Engineering. It endows students with skills related to learning processes and underlying scientific knowledge. From the second, it includes the broaden knowledge that is given and the development of skills, which are mandatory at this level. It comprises various types of specializations, which are oriented to key areas in the development of the country and which are widely accepted in the market. It is oriented to areas in which the department expertises are acknowledged both in Portugal and abroad.

This Master Course is based on a common program and then it is divided into three different major areas:

  • Telecommunications, Electronics and Computers
  • Automation
  • Energy

In addition to a common area that they all share, they comprise specialization areas, namely: Industrial Management, Industrial Informatics, Industrial Electronics and Instrumentation, Robotics, Energy Networks and Markets, Electrical Installations, Microelectronics, Signal, Audio and Video Processing. They are constituted by course units that are optional.

The study plan also comprises minors, which are coherently organised in different areas of specialisation. They lead to a complementary training, which will be mentioned in students’ diploma.

Career Opportunities:
Of all areas of Engineering around the world, this is probably one of the most dynamic ones. It can be seen in all the development related to new information technologies and communications, as well as in the domains of industrial production and automation and new ways of energy production and management.

This Master Course combines a solid and specific training in relevant areas to the development of the country. Hence, it increases career opportunities in industry and services related to Electrical and Computer Engineering. There are career opportunities in the following areas: technological innovation and conception, exploration, maintenance and management in various areas (microelectronics, information systems, logistics, optical communications, energy systems, automation, robotics, industrial informatics, administration of computer systems and networks).
