Master in Occupational Safety and Hygiene Engineering

The study plan comprises a training component (1st year + one semester) and a dissertation (3 semesters). After the successful completion of the master, students will be awarded with a specialization diploma and a post-graduate diploma. Then they may require the Vocational Training Certificate (Certificado de Aptidão Profissional) of Advanced Technician in Occupational Safety and Hygiene (Técnico Superior em Segurança e Higiene do Trabalho) at the Working Conditions Committee (Autoridade para as Condições de Trabalho). Students will be awarded with a master degree after the submission and approval of the dissertation. It has to be on a subject previously approved by the Scientific Committee of the programme.
The applicants may choose their supervisor and dissertation theme.

Aims:
The Master in Occupational Safety and Hygiene aims to:

  • Train specialized people, who have the necessary skills and competences to develop, coordinate and control forecast and protection activities against occupational risks in the different sectors of economic activity.

Entry requirements:
It is admitted the application of candidates holding a degree in engineering or in other related areas, as well as candidates with an undergraduate diploma in the area of engineering (being each case independently analysed). However, applicants must prove to have scientific preparation and knowledge to take part of this programme.

The Scientific Committee of this programme may accept applicants who hold diplomas in other subjects, whose scientific training is appropriate to this programme.


Extra requirements:

The selection process involves the analysis of applicants’ average marks, their curriculum and training. Applicants may be asked to attend an interview

Timetable:
This programme takes place essentially after working hours (Monday to Friday, from 6pm to 10pm). However, some optional course units may take place during daytime.

The total sum of ECTS credits of the optional course units of the 1st semester must add up to 18 ECTS credits.

The total sum of ECTS credits of the optional course units of the 1st semester must add up to 6 ECTS credits.

Applicants who request credit transfer have to select the option ‘Yes’ at the end of the form. Besides they have to enclose the certificates, content and timetable of the course units. For extra information see: (https://www.fe.up.pt/si/cursos_apres_geral.ver_regime?pct_reg=RIM).

Numerus Clausus:
Master Programme: 50 students.

  • 1st phase – 30 vacancies – (10 for students who hold a VTC; 20 for students who do not hold a VTC in OSH)

  • 2nd phase – 20 vacancies – (10 for students who hold a VTC; 10 for students who do not hold a VTC in OSH)

Vacancies unfilled in the 1st phase will be available in the 2nd phase.
Unplaced applicants in the 1st phase will be placed to the 2nd phase.
The minimum number of students necessary to run this programme is 20 (twenty).
