Master in Chemical Engineering

Since 2006/2007 Feup offers an Integrated Master in Chemical Engineering, which was included in the reform of the Portuguese higher education (The Bologna Process). It is an academic degree which endows students with professional skills in the area of chemical engineering.

This master's has been reformulated and now it gives students the opportunity to learn new methodologies of work, which are in consonance with the evolution of teaching in the best European institutions.

This academic degree acquaints students with underlying knowledge on Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Chemical Engineering Science. This masters is based not only on the practice of engineering but also on designing. Besides, students have the chance to deepen their knowledge in the following areas:

  • Processes and Products
  • Energy and Environment
  • Biotechnology

Academic degrees

Students who complete this degree will earn a diploma in Integrated Master in Chemical Engineering (Second Cycle). It corresponds to a degree which lasts 5 years (300 ETCS).

Students will finish the first cycle of this degree when they achieve 180 ECTS (Undergraduate Course in Sciences of Engineering- Chemical Engineering).

Study Plans

In 2009/2010 the Integrated Masters in Chemical Engineering will be structured in different branches. The courses of the first 3 years are the same to all students. They are based on core chemical engineering fundamental knowledge (mathematics, physics, chemical reactions, thermodynamics, transportation, separation processes). And then a more specific training:

Processes and Product: Training more related to traditional Chemical Engineering. This specialization gives special emphasis to design, project, development and optimization of the production of chemical products which are part of peoples’ everyday life.

Energy and Environment: Since there has been a growing concern regarding the environment and scarcity of energy resources, this branch of specialization aims at endowing students with professional skills, which will make them able to apply the correct environmental and energy approaches. These approaches are based on the development of more clean technologies, minimization of the consumption of natural resources, energy optimization and use of renewable energies and raw materials.

Biotechnology: This branch of specialization allows students to complete their training in Chemical Engineering with specific skills in different domains of Biotechnology. This training is specially aimed to food industry, pharmaceutical industry and valorisation of natural products.

Professional Skills

As far as professional skills are concerned, the main goal of the Integrated Masters in Chemical Engineering is to prepare students and make them able to start a professional career in an industrial activity or investigation, with high standards of quality.

Students who complete this academic degree have to be prepared to work as Chemical Engineers in their areas of specialization, either in Portugal or abroad, namely in industrial companies, services companies, project offices, municipal services and governmental agencies.

Career Opportunities

Masters in Chemical Engineering have many career opportunities, namely in industry, investigation and technical-commercial activities.

As far as career opportunities in industry are concerned, chemical engineers can act as a support to industrial operation, including monitoring and process control, as well as production managers, including operation programming and quality control, or designing and industrial innovation.
