The present Civil Engineering Degree Course may be traced back to the Public Works Engineering Course initiated in 1885 at the Polytechnical Academy of Porto.
The Course has duration of five years, the first four having a fixed curriculum. In the final year one area of specialisation will be selected from the following seven: Materials and Construction Processes; Structures;Construction; Geotechnics; Planning; Roads; Hydraulics.
AREAS OF ACTIVITY
The graduates in Civil Engineering will be mostly concerned with the planning, design, coordination, execution and control of:
(i) Public works, namely buildings, roads, railways, bridges and viaducts, dams, water supply and sewage.
(ii) Private works, mostly buildings, industrial plants and infrastructures.

Teaching LanguageThe courses are taught in Portuguese. Excepcionally and considering the number of foreign students, the courses may be taught in English, after approval by the Scientific Commission of LEC, as indicated by the courses' Masters.
