MOBILITY TRAINEESHIPS

PROTOCOL WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND, Baltimore County (USA)

Under the partnership established between FEUP and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), in the United States of America, students in the 2nd cycle of studies (master's degree) can apply for an academic internship at this institution to develop their research work within the scope of the ‘Dissertation’ course unit, but with mandatory defence at FEUP.

To do so, interested students must discuss this opportunity with the Coordinator Professor of the ‘Dissertation’ course unit OR with the Master's thesis Supervisor (if they already have a professor for this purpose) and with the Mobility Coordinator, so that the internship is validated by FEUP prior to application.

OBJECTIVE: to undertake an internship to develop dissertation work, but with mandatory defence at FEUP.

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES: If you are interested in a research opportunity at UMBC, you should fill out this form. Students should research the current research topics through the relevant online pages of the University.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS: It is the student's responsibility to contact the destination institution/supervisor to request information on the documents to be submitted (globalpartnerships@umbc.edu). We recommend that you consult the institution's Info Sheet on mobility in advance.

TRAINEESHIP DURATION: between 4 and 6 months (extensions are not accepted).

SCHOLARSHIP AND EXPENSES: there is no financial support (scholarship) from FEUP for this mobility programme.
However, 2nd cycle students who wish to carry out research work in the United States may apply for the following scholarships (separate competition and deadlines):

Students will be responsible for visa, travel and accommodation expenses, as well as for paying for health insurance at UMBC.
The selected student does not pay tuition fees at UMBC, but may have to pay an administrative fee.

VACANCIES: This agreement provides for students to undertake a 1-semester internship at the College of Engineering and Information Technology, for places available for each academic year in the following areas of study:

  • Bioengineering - 1 place.
  • Environmental Engineering - 1 place.
  • Computer Engineering and Computing - 4 places (2 per semester)
  • Mechanical Engineering - 1 vacancy.
  • Chemical Engineering - 1 vacancy

APPLICATION DEADLINE
: if there are no deadlines set by the host institution, you must formalise your application with the UMBC between September and October for an internship in the second semester, or between March and April for an internship in the first semester.

The possibility of carrying out a project/research at UMBC (which normally corresponds to the Master's thesis work, subject to defence at FEUP) will depend on the possibility of a UMBC professor accepting to supervise the internship.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES: As with other mobility programmes, students should consult the research areas of the departments related to their field of study, look for a topic/project in progress or contact the responsible professors and submit a research proposal for their Master's thesis.

During the internship period, UMBC may invite some of the exchange students to pursue a postgraduate degree at that university after the mobility period, offering scholarships for this purpose.

BEFORE formalising their application to the UMBC, students must send the OUTGOING (outgoing@fe.up.pt) Student Declaration OUT (University of Maryland Internship Mobility Programme).

Students who are formally accepted by the University of Maryland must inform OUTGOING of this selection so that an official mobility process can be created on SIGARRA, associated with the student.
