Consortium R&D Projects

FEUP has a long and productive history of collaboration with companies in the development of consortium R&D Projects, with the aim of increasing companies’ productivity and competitiveness. As a result, new products processes or services have been developed with a clear economic benefit for the companies involved.

FEUP supports companies in identifying funding opportunities for their R&D and Innovation activities and in developing partnerships with the scientific community for consortium projects.

Examples of projects in consortium

UNICER alcohol-free beer

Did you know that alcohol-free beer from UNICER is a patented process resulting from an R & D project in consortium with FEUP? Available on the market since 2007, alcohol-free Super Bock employs a globally innovative production process, and has become a leader among non-alcoholic beers in less than a month of marketing. This project had an investment of 3.5 million, 2.5 of which was for marketing and communication.

SOLARSEL - Developing an innovative system for sealing and DSC assembly

Project SOLARSEL, in conjunction with Efacec, CIN and CUF - Industrial Chemicals - aims to develop a new process of sealing Gräetzel solar cells and an experimental assembly line for this type of solar cell has already led to two patent applications.

XTREME – LAUV – Extreme version

In consortium with OceanScan - Marine Systems & Technology, Ltd. - Project XTREME – LAUV was set up with the aim of creating a Light Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (LAUV) to perform underwater monitoring.

CorkToBE - Developing coatings for cork stoppers for spirit drinks

CorkToBE is a consortium project of Amorim & Irmãos, the Polymer Skills Network Association and the Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of Coimbra, with the aim of enabling cork stoppers to enter the white spirits market. A coating for cork stoppers has been developed that serves as a barrier against the unwanted migration of polyphenolic compounds (dye) from the cork to the clear spirit. A pilot installation was also designed and assembled for coating corks. This project has led to a request for a patent.
