Study of adsorption and membrane processes.
The student should be able to design an adsorption or membrane process for a given separation.
i) Introduction. Separation processes: classification.
ii) Adsorption. Classification of adsorbents. Structure and new forms. Measurement and prediction of equilibrium. Measurement of difusivities. Batch adsorption. The batch adsorber as a dynamic system. Fixed bed adsorption. Propagation of concentration waves: de DeVault equation. Equilibrium theory: dispersive and compressive waves. Stationary fronts. The adsorption column as a dynamic system.
iii) Chromatography. Types and operating modes. HETP and the Van Deemter equation. Separation of proteins: perfusion.
iv) Ion exchange and electrophoresis.
v) Cyclic processes: pressure swing adsorption (PSA);
simulated moving bed (SMB); temperature swing adsorption (TSA) and parametric pumping (PP).
vi) Membrane processes: basic concepts; modules. Gas Permeation; reverse osmosis; microfiltration, ultrafiltration and nanofiltration; electrodyalisis; pervaporation. Concentration polarization, gel formation and fouling.
viii) Selection and sequencing of separation processes.
Theoretical explanation of adsorption processes and mass transfer in membrane systems. Some real problems are treated in the practical lessons to encourage the students to solve new problems and to use a systematic approach.

According to Faculty rules.
FG= p1*FE + p2*T + p3*R;
FG=Final Grade; FE=Final Exam; T=Test; R=report
p1= 0.65
p2= 0.20
p3= 0.15
Pass criterion: FG >= 9.5 and FE>=7.0
Recurso:
CF=FE
NOTE: The FE will consist of two parts. The minimum rating of FE>=7.0 will be applied proportionally to each of the parts.
