Teaching Staff - Responsibilities
Teaching language
Portuguese
Objectives
The students will apply in practice knowledge of other courses, namely Fluid Mechanics, Heat Transfer, Mass Transfer, and Unit Operations.
Learning outcomes and competences
The students will perform experiments on simple physical concepts and physicochemical processes and learn to communicate their results both orally and in written form.
Working method
Presencial
Program
Module I – Laboratories (3 h/week)
Execution of 8 lab works from a larger set of available experiments (the first 4 lab works are mandatory for all students):
- Flow rate measurement;
- Cooling in air of solids by natural and forced convection;
- Flow of water in porous media (fluidization);
- Oxygen absorption in water;
- Laminar flow in a tube
- Differential distillation;
- Global heat transfer coefficient in a stirred tank;
- Terminal velocity and drag force coefficient;
- Pressure drop in smooth pipes;
- Plate heat exchanger;
- Characteristic curves of a centrifugal pump;
- Distillation at total reflux;
- Constant pressure filtration.
Module II - Lab components (1.5 h / week for each class)
- Learning of practical notions of "General Engineering";
- Class on report writing and bibliographic research;
- Discussion of reports with the teacher;
- Oral presentation of experimental work and research work on industrial application;
- Demonstration classes - 3 of the works that are not performed by the groups.
Mandatory literature

Teaching methods and learning activities
Module I - Lab classes: The work is performed in small groups (between 2 and 3 students) and the students write short reports on every work done, discuss orally two of them, and present one work to the class.
Module II – Practice of Chemical Engineering/Lab complements
Evaluation Type
Distributed evaluation without final exam
