Objectives
The objectives of this curricular unit are twofold:
- on the one hand, this UC gives the possibility to each student to carry out advanced short courses directly related to topics relevant to their thesis and thus allow close knowledge of the main scientists in each specific topic, being possible to attribute credits to each of these activities;
- on the other hand, it fosters the realization of scientific communication activities, which can also be credited, thus favoring the training of students in this important component of scientific activity, through oral and poster communications in different contexts (conferences, invited lectures and within research groups), thus stimulating the acquisition of skills in science dissemination.
Learning outcomes and competences
This curricular unit provides advanced forms of learning focused on knowledge and topics of relevance to each student's thesis, which may originate from the attendance of advanced short courses (usually no longer than one week) that allow to know closely the main names in each area of knowledge of a specific topic.
At the same time, it also encourages students to carry out scientific dissemination actions through oral and poster communications at scientific meetings, and it is expected that at the end of attending the CU, students will have improved or acquired science dissemination skills.

Program
The ECTS credits attributed to this UC can be accumulated over the first 3 semesters of the doctoral program and obtained through :
- Attendance of advanced courses accepted by the PRODEB scientific committee. The ECTS to be awarded are established by the SC, unless these courses have pre-assigned ECTS. These advanced courses can take place at U.Porto or at any other university or national or international organization provided they have high scientific standards.
- Realization of scientific communications:
- Presentation in the respective group or laboratory - 2 ECTs
- National presentations and posters at international meetings - 3 ECTS
- Oral presentations at international congresses - 4 ECTS.
Each student can accumulate the respective ECTS through the combination of actions they want within the fixed limits, thus adjusting the UC to his/her interests.
