Objectives

This course aims at developing management and entrepreneurship competencies, integrating a solid theoretical basis with case study analysis and discussion.

Learning outcomes and competences

After completing this course, students should be able to:
1. Understand the role of the manager and management, as well as its evolution.
2. Understand and explore how information technology can enable the firm's management and strategy.
3. Understand the different functional areas of financial management, marketing and operations, and how they can be integrated in the firm's strategy.
4. Apply a set of concepts, methods and tools of financial management, marketing, operations and strategy to analyze problems, identify alternatives and make decisions.
5. Be able to apply management methods and tools to analyze company's management and identify improvements.
6. Recall and describe the components of a business model and how they work together to create, deliver, and capture value.
7. Apply the conceptual frameworks from the previous point to develop and analyze business models and entrepreneurial strategies.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Lectures will focus on the fundamental management concepts and tools, which provide the basis for the applied work. Practical work will focus on case study analysis and discussion, with two types: a) Case study discussion in class of cases made available the previous week, with no evaluation; b) 3 case study analysis, report and discussion in class, which will count for the frequency evaluation. 


Type of evaluation: Distributed evaluation with final exam

Terms of frequency: Students are required to complete a group assignment :
Analysis and discussion of 3 cases studies (60% of final grade)
Individual participation in case study discussion (15% of final grade)
Minimum classification of 37,5% in each of the evaluation components.

Formula of evaluation: Final grade = 0,6* (analysis and discussion of four case studies)+ 0,15*(individual participation in case study discussion) +0,25* exam.

Eligibility for exams

Students are required to complete a group assignment :
Analysis and discussion of 3 cases studies (60% of final grade)
Individual participation in case study discussion (15% of final grade)


The individual frequency evaluation may vary between -2 and +2, according to the results of the inter group evaluation

Minimum classification of 37,5% in each of the evaluation components.

Calculation formula of final grade

Final grade = 0,6* (analysis and discussion of four case studies)+ 0,15*(individual participation in case study discussion) +0,25* exam.

Students who fail to participate in case discussion will have zero in their discussion evaluation, which represents 50% of the case study evaluation.

The classification of the individual continuous assessment of each element of the working group may vary between -2 and +2 values according to the results of the inner work group assessment.

Minimum classification of 37,5% in each of the evaluation components.

Examinations or Special Assignments

In special terms the final classification will be obtained through the following procedures:
1. Carry out an individual assignment defined by the professor;
2. Attend an oral exam about the theme of the assignment or other themes which the professor deem necessary.
4. Do a written exam. final grade= 0.40*( assignment presentation and report) + 0.6*(exam grade)

Minimum classification of 37,5% in each of the evaluation components.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Working students who cannot attend all classes can fulfill the distributed component of the evaluation through the following procedures:
1.Individual assignment defined by Professors
2. Intermediary and final presentation of individual assignment on predefined dates.
3. The three case study presentations and discussions are mandatory.
4. Working students should contact the course professors to define the work assignment.

Classification improvement

The classification improvement of the exam follows FEUP'S regulations.
The classification improvement of the distributed component can be done at the same time as the practical assignments in the following academic year.
