Objectives

The objective of this course is to familiarize students with the major issues facing the area of  corporate financial management  providing them with the knowledge and basic tools for:I

1-financial statement analysis, in order  to make an economic and financial diagnosis of the firm;  2- taking  the most appropriate financial decisions in a company, in both  operational and strategic level.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of the course students will be able to:
1-make an economic and financial analysis and diagnosis of the firm; 
2-  calculate the firm value
3- take decisions on the  financial  policy for the firm
4-  undeststand the  basic firm´s  financial decisions at the operacional level

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Basic knowlegde of  Financial Accounting.

Part I-_Introduction

Cap 1 _Overall vision of  corporate financial management.

Cap 2 _ Time value of money.

Part II_  Financial Statement  Analysis

Cap  3 _ The financial condition of the firm.  Balance sheet analysis: liquidity , solvability  and capital structure analysis.

Cap 4 _ The financial performance of the firm. Income Satement  analysis :  profitability vs growth vs risk.

Cap 5  _ Cash Flow Statement   analysis.

Part III-Financial Management

Teaching methods and learning activities

Os fundamentos teóricos da u.c. são apresentados em aulas teóricas. Ao longo da unidade curricular serão apresentados e discutidos casos ilustrativos das matérias lecionadas. As aulas teóricas são complementadas com aulas práticas destinadas à resolução e análise de casos e com o trabalho de grupo que visa  a análise e diagnóstico financeiro de uma empresa portuguesa (cotada em Bolsa).

Eligibility for exams

According to the General Evaluation Rules of FEUP. 

Do not exceed the limit number of absences corresponding to 25% of classes (tutorials).

Calculation formula of final grade

CF = 40% Group work + 60% Test

OBS:

1 - Minimum grade in each component, for approval to the discipline: 7 points (out of 20)

2 - The  group work  is related to Part II of the program.

 After the publication of the group workgrade, each group will carry out a cross-evaluation between pairs (with differentiation of individual grades up to plus or minus 2 values ​​and sum of null variations) and the teacher may also apply a differentiation of plus or minus 1 value to the resulting individual final grade.


3- The test includes a theoretical part  on the whole syllabus, and a practical part on PART III of the programme.

 

4- There is the possibility of appeal, at the time of appeal, to  the test (only one of the tests, in the case of students with special assessment).

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

In normal season: same  evaluation rules as for students who are not assigned the status. (40% Group work + 60% Test)


In appeal season or in specific seasons: Global exam (100% weighting)


(students who have completed the group work, and failed or missed the first test, may be assessed only on the subject underlying the test  (40% weighting), maintaining the grade of the work (60%);  this option will have to be requested to the regent of the UC, via email, up to 5 days before the exam date)

 

Classification improvement

By a Global Exam (100% weight)
This examination covers the whole  syllabus.

Observations

OBS

1- Global exam_  you can  bring your ratios  formulae (as provided in   Sigarra_Contents ) and  consult Test _ without consultation.

2_  Tests/Exams  are held in computer rooms. Calculating machines are not allowed. Calculations are performed in Excel 

3-   The  Group Work  is part of the ongoing assessment. It will not be considered for grade improvement (corresponding to the overall examination only)
