Objectives

In this course, the students will acquire fundamental knowledge on Heat Transfer, together with some illustrative applications. It is intended that they develop a well structure thinking ability to formulate and solve problems, such as the establishment of differential thermal energy balances and definition of boundary conditions. Particular importance is given to the development of critical thinking in analysing different issues during the semester, such as the identification of the phenomena that, in each specific situation, determine the overall rate of heat transfer.

Learning outcomes and competences

Students must reach the minimum objectives expressed in the previous point.

Working method

Program

Theoretical and Problem solvi-ng Program:
Introduction.
(One-dimensional) conduction with and without internal heat generation.
Natural and forced convection.
Convection heat transfer coefficients.
Heat transfer equipments – heat exchangers.
Transient state heat transfer. Introduction to heat transfer by radiation.

Laboratory Program:
Practical assignments consisting of the contents of Transport Phenomena I are suggested to the students in the courses of Chemical Engineering Practice of the 3rd year.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Exame 70,00
Teste 30,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

Designation Time (hours)
Estudo autónomo 50,00
Frequência das aulas 50,00
Total: 100,00

Eligibility for exams

Attendance at classes and at least one examination taken.

Calculation formula of final grade

The final mark results from the grades of the exam (weight: 70%) and of 2 tests (30%) along the classes.
The final classification of the students who choose not to deliver the 2 tests will be only the grade of the exam.

Examinations or Special Assignments

See 3b) – group assignments

Internship work/project

There is not.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

N/A

Classification improvement

The classification improvement can be obtained with an exam that will weigh 70% or 100% of the final classification, depending on whether the students have or have not done the short tests.
