SPECIFIC AIMS: to provide the students with a consolidation of the knowledge acquired in other courses and with practical advanced knowledge relevant to an environmental engineer, in the topics of unit operations for conventional and advanced treatment of liquid effluents, gases and solid wastes. This course also aims to develop teamwork and report writing skills.
LEARNING OUTCOMES AND COMPETENCES. The students will be able to acquire:
Laboratory assignments:
Solid Waste Treatment Systems - MTR (DEMM):
MTR 1 - Cementation of metals in solution;
MTR 2 - Leaching of metals from wastes;
MTR 3 - Precipitation of metals in solutions.
Water/Wastewater Treatment Systems – MTL (DEQ):
MTL 1 – Flotation for the treatment of an effluent from a recycling paper industry;
MTL 2 - Coagulation and flocculation treatment of a textile effluent;
MTL 3 - Adsorption of phenol on activated carbon for the treatment of liquid effluent: adsorption kinetics (MTL 3a) and adsorption equilibrium isotherm (MTL 3b);
MTL 4 - Fenton process for the degradation of organic pollutants;
MTL 5 - Membrane technology for the treatment of liquid effluents;
MTL 6 - Laboratory sedimentation/clarification experiment.
Gas Treatment Systems – MTG (DEQ):
MTG 1 - Adsorption on activated carbon for the treatment of gaseous streams;
MTG 2 - Laboratory experiment with cyclones.
Labs/Rooms:
- DEMM : M102
- DEQ: E002/E003
Teaching Methodologies: execution of scheduled assignments; brief presentations of the adequate procedures.

Estudo autónomo | 123,00 |
Frequência das aulas | 39,00 |
Total: | 162,00 |
Terms of Frequency: (i) the students should attend all the laboratory classes; (ii) the students have to perform all the laboratory assignments and reach a minimum grade of 10 (NP).
Type of Evaluation: distributed without final exam and cannot be evaluated with a single assessment.
Evaluation Equation: the final mark (NF) is calculated by:
NF = 0,6 NP + 0,4 NT = 0,3 AC + 0,3 NR + 0,4 NT
where:
NF – Final mark;
NT - mark of written short-tests, with practical and theoretical questions. The minimum NT mark is 7/20.
AC - mark of the continuous assessment, according to the short-reports, information on the individual laboratory skills, preparation of the experimental work, correct utilization of the laboratory book and discussion of results;
NR - mark of reports.
