Objectives

The main objective of this course is to give students an overview of the principles and techniques of Operations Management and logistics, namely concerning:

  • know and understand the key concepts in operations management, so as to solve real world problems, both in industrial and service companies;
  • acquire an integrated vision of the operations management inside the organizations, namely in what concerns techniques and strategies, as well as be able to identify and tackle problems using quantitative methods;
  • understand the need and role of forecasting methods, inventory planning, and of scheduling of tasks in production systems and supply chains;
  • know and apply lean manufacturing concepts and tools, with the aim of reducing wastes and increase the efficiency of production systems
  • know and apply techniques and tools for design, planning and management of logistic and distribution systems

Learning outcomes and competences

To allow the first-year PhD students to create, update and develop broad but simultaneously in-depth competences in operations management and logistics, which may allow them to:

- develop an integrated vision of the fundamental concepts, strategies and advanced techniques in operations management, logistics and the supply chain management;

- understand the role of operations and logistics in the company’s global strategy;

- Identify, explore and manage the bottlenecks of the production system, ensuring the effectiveness of interventions for an improved productivity.

- Draw, plan and run operations and logistics, bearing in mind the maximization of operational efficiency and customer satisfaction;

Program

This course introduces concepts and techniques related to the design, planning, control, and improvement of both manufacturing and service operations. The following issues are covered:

  1. Competitiveness and Operations; Different approaches to operations strategy: cost, quality, response time, flexibility and innovation, outsourcing strategies and 'contract manufacturing'; Operations strategies in services.
  2. Fundamentals of production flow: approaches, tools and techniques.
  3. Development, implementation and maintenance of "lean" operations approaches.
  4. Design, Coordination and optimization of Supply Chains
  5. Strategic and Aggregated Capacity Management / Production Planning and Scheduling
  6. Materials Management, Demand Planning and Inventory Management
  7. Logistic and distribution systems: Transport Planning and Vehicle Routing
  8. Warehousing

Mandatory literature

Teaching methods and learning activities

The course is mainly aligned with active learning. It relies on a combination of case discussions, lectures, readings, and assignments. To pursue the course objective most effectively, students will have to:

Prepare and solve the assigned case

Read and present research papers on different operations management & logistics topics

Solve exercises and discuss them in class;

The supporting class tools will be computer, a data show, and specific software packages besides EXCEL.
