Objectives

This curricular unit aims the presentation, discussion and promotion of advances related to the processing and applications of aluminium alloys.
The objectives of this course are the study of the main processing procedures, namely casting and plastic forming, and their effect on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the aluminium and its alloys.

Learning outcomes and competences

This curricular unit offers the student skills in: processing alternatives of different families of aluminium alloys and their impact on the microstructure and properties; critical analysis of the state- of-the-art, highlighting the most relevant aspects with potential industrial application; teamwork, communication strategies (written and oral) and motivation.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Recommended prerequisites: concepts learnt on the curricular units Phase Diagrams, Mechanical Behaviour of Materials, Heat Treating, Materials Science and Metallic Materials.

Program

Manufacturing processes od aluminium alloys.
Properties and applications of aluminium alloys (Al/Si, Al/Mg, Al/Li).
Aluminium matrix composites: properties, processing and applications.
Joining processes of aluminium and its alloys.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Each of the topics indicated in the program will be addressed in presentations made by teachers. Subsequently, the students, distributed by groups of 3 elements, will prepare lectures, on stipulated days, about a particular aspect of each of the themes.
The presentations will be followed by a debate, moderated by the teachers.
