Objectives

1. Technical knowledge 1.1 Knowledge of underlying sciences (chemistry, physics and microbiology) applied to the characterization of liquid effluents and wastes. 1.2 Core engineering fundamental knowledge: methodologies for characterization of wastewater, municipal solid waste (MSW) and sludge. 1.3 Fundamental regulations 2. Acquisition of personal and professional skills 2.1 Engineering reasoning and problem solving: classification and characterization of residues, liquid waste disposal regulations. 3. Acquisition of interpersonal skills 3.1 Teamwork: teamwork training 4. Acquisition of tools to conceive, design, implement and operate systems.

Learning outcomes and competences

In this Course it is intended that students acquire:

-Knowledge of legislation governing water quality and waste, waste characterization and classification standards and rules for discharge of wastewater.

-Knowledge of methodologies for sampling water and waste, the main parameters of characterization and analytical methods.

- Training the developmental level of team work and problem solving.

Program

1. The importance of the composition of wastewater and solid waste. Physical composition. Chemical composition. Most common parameters in the evaluation of the physical, chemical and microbiological composition. 2. Methodologies for characterization of wastewater, MSW and sludge. 3. Sampling, hazardous characteristics in waste and evaluation. Leaching tests 4. Characteristics for waste classification according to the Portuguese regulation D.L nº 183/2009 and D.L nº152/2002 and Directive 2003/33/CE. 5. Water quality standards and industrial wastewater discharge limits.

Eligibility for exams

According to General Evaluation Rules of FEUP.

Calculation formula of final grade

Final Grade will be based on the average grade of both modules: Effluents and waste. FG= 0.6EC+0.4WC= 0.6 (0.6tE+aE) + 0.4(0.6tW + 0.4aW) EC- Effluent characterization WC- Waste characterization tE- Tests on effluents aE- assignment on effluents tW- test on waste aW- assignment on waste Students have to reach a minimum grade of 7 out 20 in each of the written exams tE and tW, otherwise the weighted average grade of the two components will not be taken into account. Students have to reach a minimum grade of 10 out of 20 to complete this course unit.

The written test of the Wastewaters module will be held on the 13 november (the hour and room will be announced later). The written test of the Residues module will be held in the normal period of exams.

Examinations or Special Assignments

In both modules students will have to carry out a group assignment, in order to apply their knowledge.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

A final exam at the corresponding season.
