Objectives

To acquire advanced engineering knowledge in purification processes of biological products, as well as their approval and regulation. To develop students’ reasoning skills, as well as their capacity to analyse production diagrams and to use bioinformatic tools.

Learning outcomes and competences

Learn how to analyze an industrial production process particularly the operation units concerning downstream processing. Learn how to select the most adequate equipment for each operation unit and to perform equipment sizing in particular cases.

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Trabalho escrito 100,00
Total: 100,00

Eligibility for exams

According to General Evaluation Rules of FEUP, students have to attend classes.

Calculation formula of final grade

Final grade will be obtained by an weighted average of the several components of the final work, the classification from the oral presentations and the log book. The respective weights wil be discussed on class.

Examinations or Special Assignments

Students will have to do a group assignment, being the assignment sheet delivered at the beginning of the semester. The assignment is to be carried out during the semester (some parts will be carried out in class). The group assignment comprises: a) Introduction b) Patent research c) Development of a production diagram d) Bioinformatic analysis of proteins e) Simulation of purification processes f) Conclusion. This work will be orally presented and discussed in class.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

By globla exam on the resit period. Admittance to that exam requires the delivery of the group work with all its components and with a final evaluation of at least 7/20 points.

Classification improvement

Students can improve their grades by attending an exam at the recurso (resit) season.
