Objectives

To develop and apply scientific research methodologies by carrying out a research work that can be, in some cases, a first approach to the Master's thesis. Participation in seminars on emerging topics in bioengineering given by experienced researchers in this area.

Learning outcomes and competences

Students who obtain positive rating should be able to:
-Develop skills in presenting the results of an experimental scientific study as a writing report and orally

-Acquire knowledge on Bioengineering
-Develop skills to work individually and in groups

Working method

Presencial

Program

Preliminary R&D work on subjects related to Biological Engineering. The subject of the work can be of an experimental, theoretical or computacional nature. Each student will develop one project.
This work may have a follow-up ijn the Master's Thesis, if the student is interested in developing it further. The R&D projects will ocupy 8 weeks.
Additionally, there will be 3 to 5 weeks devoted to research Seminars presented by invited scientists.

Mandatory literature

James M. Lee; Biochemical engineering. ISBN: 0-13-085317-8

Teaching methods and learning activities

Initially, the students will recveive information about the themes proposed for the research work they wil have to carry out during the semestre. Afterwards, the students will select the themes they prefer. Each research work is accompanied by one supervisor (in some cases, with a co-supervisor). In the end of the semestre, the students will submit a Final Report and will present and defend their work. The assessment panel is composed by the supervisors/co-supervisors and the responsible(s) for the course.

Eligibility for exams

Admission is granted by accomplishing the work during the semestre and by the delivery of the Final Report. The accomplishment of the work is assessed by the supercisor/co-supervisor.

Calculation formula of final grade

The final grade is calculated on the basis of the 3 following parameters:
-Seminaries: Report on one of the seminars to be selected (20%)

-Project progress report and oral presentation (10%)

- Individual R & D Project: Performance during the semester and Project Report (50%), Oral Presentation (20%)
