Objectives

To develop and apply scientific research methodologies by carrying out a research work that can be, in some cases, a first approach to the Master's thesis.

Learning outcomes and competences

Students who obtain positive rating should be able to:

-Develop skills in presenting the results of an experimental scientific study as a writing report and orally;

-Acquire knowledge on Bioengineering;

-Develop skills to work individually and in group.

Working method

Presencial

Program

Students are assigned R&D work on subjects related to Biological Engineering. The assignments are experimental, theoretical or computational. In the academic year 2014-2015, each student will be assigned a topic.

Mandatory literature

Villadsen J, Nielsen J, Lidén G. ; Bioreaction Engineering Principles, Springer, 2011. ISBN: 978-1-4419-9687-9

Comments from the literature

The bibliography depends on the Bioengineering project developed by the student.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Presentation of the working proposals, followed by the selection of the students’ topics of choice. Each work is monitored by a supervisor (and, if necessary, a co-supervisor). Students should submit a final report and make a presentation and defence before the curricular unit’s coordinator.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Defesa pública de dissertação, de relatório de projeto ou estágio, ou de tese 30,00
Participação presencial 35,00
Trabalho escrito 35,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

Designation Time (hours)
Elaboração de relatório/dissertação/tese 25,00
Estudo autónomo 45,00
Frequência das aulas 4,00
Trabalho laboratorial 250,00
Total: 324,00

Eligibility for exams

Attendance frequency is obtained through the development of a work throughout the semester and the submission of a final report. Attendance frequency is assessed by the supervisor.

Calculation formula of final grade

Final mark takes into consideration 3 parameters: (1) Work Monitoring: Quality, Commitment, Autonomy (35%); (2) Report: Organisation, Scientific Content (35%); (3) Presentation/ Oral discussion: Clarity, Relevance, Defence arguments (30%)

Examinations or Special Assignments

Not applicable.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

n.a.

Classification improvement

Development of a new individual R&D project.
