Objectives

In this UC the students do laboratory practice on what they have learned previously in their MIEQ and they learn basic notions of electricity. The UC has two components: Chemical Engineering “EQ” (75%) and “Eletro” (25%).

 (A)”EQ”

Laboratory practice on Mass Transfer and Separation Processes and also some Heat transfer and Fluid flow. The laboratory classes “EQ” alternate (week on/week off) with “Eletro” laboratory classes.

(B)”Eletro” Basic experiments to get familiar with measurements related to electric circuits.   Analysis of simple circuits (DC) and (AC) circuits using the oscilloscope.

Learning outcomes and competences

The students get in touch with physical phenomena and simple physico-chemical processes, at experimental level and develop skills of communication, both oral and written, of the results of their analysis.

They also learn to measure basic quantities of electricity and analyze simple DC and AC circuits using the oscilloscope.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Theoretical concepts in the fields of mass and heat transfer phenomena, unit operations and separation processes.

Program

 (A) Component ”EQ”

The students perform 5 laboratory ‘set’ works in the general areas of mass and heat transfer, separation processes, fluid mecanics andunit operations:

      T1-Fluidization

T2- Absorption of O2
T3- Heat transfer coefficient in an agitated tank.
T4- Continuous distillation at total reflux
T5- Differential distillation.
T6- Plate heat exchanger
T7-
Filtration at constant pressure

T1 and T2 are performed by all the groups.
The groups have the schedule to perform all the works through the plan presented in the beginning of the course.

(B) Component ”Eletro”

Set of 2 lectures to consolidate material from Física II, coupled with three laboratory classes on:

1- Measurement of electric tension, elements in series and in parallel;

2- Kirchhoff laws and RC circuit.

3- RLC circuits in AC.

Teaching methods and learning activities

“EQ”

Each group of two students performs the experimental work, writes a short report on it and discusses it with the teacher. Oral apresentation based on of an industrial application related with one experimental work performed in the LAB. Detail discussion with the teachers of one work selected.

“Eletro”

In the main lectures, there is a brief explanations of the concepts, phenomena and laws addressed in the experiments.

In the lab students perform their work in groups of 2 or 3. They have to prepare the lab experiment in advance.

A pre/post-test strategy will be used to access knowledge gain.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Participação presencial 15,00
Prova oral 18,80
Teste 7,50
Trabalho escrito 18,70
Trabalho laboratorial 40,00
Total: 100,00

Eligibility for exams

"Electro" module:
The final assessment in "Electro"  is based on:

Preparation of each experiment, in group - 30%

Lab work in group and discussion of results - 40%

Individual exam with multiple choice qustions about all the experiments - 30%.

"EQ" module:
The final assessment in EQ is based on:

  • Participation in the classes and lab work – 50%

  • Lab work and oral presentation – 25%

  • Oral discussion of a lab work– 25%

Calculation formula of final grade

Final mark = 75% "EQ"+25% "Eletro"

Examinations or Special Assignments

Not applicable

Internship work/project

Not applicable

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Lab exam (modules "EQ" + "Eletro"), detailed writen report. Oral presentation of another experimental work.

Classification improvement

Lab exam of 3 experimental works ("EQ" + "Eletro") and discussion of the results with the teacher. Written reports of the same 3 lab works.
