Objectives

This course will focus on road design of only one roadway. This course will cover a vast range of subjects, so that students are able to design a municipal road, even if they are not specialized on that subject.
At the end of the semester, students should:
1- be capable of understanding and developing applications
2- be capable of applying their knowledge to solve problems and new situations in various contexts.
3- be capable of incorporating knowledge, dealing with complex situations with lack of information. They should also take into account their ethic and social responsibilities.
4- be capable of communicating their conclusions unambiguously. With the syllabus of the curricular unit of Roads 1 students are able to interpret and carry out a road project.

Learning outcomes and competences

SKILLS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Knowledge: Understanding the concepts that underlie the road geometric characteristics of the roads.
Comprehension: Interpret and manipulate the drawn elements that are part of highway design. Identify the characteristics of road elements and associate them with parameters indicators of its performance in terms of functional and economic efficiency.
Application: Must be able to meet the goals set earlier.
Analysis: Learn to distinguish a good from a bad guideline (axis).
Summary: Apply the skills provided in an integrated manner. Formulate proposals for changes in procedures or strategies road.
Rating: Criticizing the methodologies and concepts used and anticipate the lines of evolution that they can follow.
Engineering Project Design: dealing with real elements of design and seek to develop more efficient solutions in relation to function / cost / benefit.
Engineering Research: the aim is not discipline training scientists.
Practice in Engineering: Know and contact information provided by actual companies and reflect on its significance from the perspective of the future sustainability of the road construction business, both national and international.

 

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Are relevant basic knowledge of physics and mathematics, especially geometry and trigonometry.

Program

Relation between vehicles and roads characteristics. General equation of motion. Adherence and breaking distance. Skidding on curves.

Road geometry. Straight road and circular curves transition clothoids studied in the road perspective. Standards for road plan.


The subject content is technological, but also scientific.

DEMONSTRATION OF THE SYLLABUS COHERENCE WITH THE CURRICULAR UNIT'S OBJECTIVES:
With the syllabus of the curricular unit of Roads 1 students are able to interpret and carry out a road project.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical classes- oral presentation of the subjects of the course with the support of transparencies and the black board.

Practical classes- presentation of complementary subjects and problem solving related with the program

DEMONSTRATION OF THE COHERENCE BETWEEN THE TEACHING METHODOLOGIES AND THE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
The teaching methodologies permit students to apply the learned knowledge taught in an integrated way. Formulate proposals for changing roads procedures or strategies. Criticizing the methodologies and used concepts and preview the lines of evolution. Deal with real elements of design and seek to develop more efficient solutions in relation function/cost/benefit. To know and contact available information provided by real companies and reflect on its meaning in the perspective of the future sustainability of the business of road construction, both nationally and internationally.

Eligibility for exams

Achieving final classification requires compliance with attendance at the course unit, according to the MIEC assessment rules. It is considered that students meet the attendance requirements if, having been regularly enrolled, the number of absences of 25% for each of the classes’ types is not exceeded.

CF = Máx{0,75 * EX + 0,15 * MT1 + 0,10 * MT2; EX}
