This course unit aims to make students understand: - the role of Information Systems (IS) in organisations and the importance of being aligned with organisations strategy; - the concept of Information Systems Architecture (ISA) and its importance within organisations and ist role in supporting business strategy.
Students should:
acquire knowledge in business models in digital economy; be capable of making decisions in IS, mainly in the area of IS planning and management; be capable of using IS in the aspects related to business analysis and knowledge management; understand the concept of Information Systems Architecture (ISA) and its importance within organisations; be acquainted with some frameworks and their practical application in ISA definition; be capable of using methods and tools to describe different architectures involved in ISA (business, data, applications, technology); be capable of developing an appropriate ISA to support business objectives and strategy; have contact with some trends of application development in order to foster the exchange of information and interoperability (XML, Web Services, SOA, etc.)
Information Technologies (IT) and Information Systems (IS); Technological evolution; The future of the Internet. IT/IS infrastructures and investments; evolution of IT/IS in organisations, Nolan’s model; the role and importance of IS; IS dimensions; Types of IS – Transaction Processing Systems (TPS), Management Information Systems (MIS), Decision-Support Systems (DSS) and Executive Support Systems (ESS). Information Systems in organisations; Integrated Systems ERP – Enterprise Resource Planning; Customer Relationship Management (CRM); Supply Chain Management (SCM); data and information treatment and analysis (Online Analytical Processing, Data Warehouses, Datamining) Electronic business and electronic commerce (e-Business and e-Commerce); models of business and digital economy; electronic commerce – Business to costumer (B2C), Business to Consumer (B2C) and Costumer to Costumer (C2C). Information systems planning; strategic planning for information systems; decision making in IS (investment analysis, outsourcing/ internal development, etc)
Introduction to the Architecture of Information Systems (ASI). Historical Evolution. The different approaches and definitions associated with the ASI. Frameworks to support the acquisition of ASI (Zackman, Gartner Group, Model Index, ...). ASI Methodologies. The different architectures involved in the ASI. Business Architecture. Data Architecture. Applications Architectures. Architecture technology. Methods and tools to characterize different architectures. Exchange of information between applications (XML). Interoperability between applications (Web Services). Services oriented architecture (SOA).
Classes are based on the presentation of theoretical notions - Case studies - Development of a teamwork ISA project, which will be supervised and discussed during classes.
