Objectives

This topic aims the presentation, discussion and searching of new routes and objectives of the main topics about aluminium alloy processing and properties of different families and classes. It aims to deepening the knowledge, discussion, about the alternative routes to extract aluminium from ores, aluminium families, relationship between properties and manufacturing processing, surface treatments and common end use markets.

Learning outcomes and competences

The student will learn the relationship between aluminium alloy properties, process manufacturing, and end uses. Also focus will be given on the environmental impact of the process and use, selection and presentation the manufacture processes which enable to achieve higher service performance. Students will critically analyse bibliographic and any other information source. During the practical component they will also enhance the communication and collaboration team work

Program

Minerals and industrial alternatives to manufacture aluminium alloys. Environmental impact and common and use markets. Manufacture processes from liquid and solid processes: plastic deformation, machining, welding and metal casting. Common heat treatments and final properties. Hardening of aluminium alloys. Corrosion processes and protection treatments.

Mandatory literature

vários ; TALAT - European Aluminium Association, 2012 (Reference from European Aluminium Association)

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical component - based on classes at http://www.alueurope.eu/talat/. From there each student shall prepare a class to talk about some specific subject. Practical component - each group of two students will develop a short research project, which will be presented and discussed, and a poster should also be delivered.
