Objectives

This course aims to acquaint students with theoretical and practical concepts in illuminating engineering and industrial facilities, in order to make them able to develop electricity projects in industrial facilities. Students should be capable of handling equipments adequately, using the most appropriate calculations and forms of management of electricity installation. It should be given special emphasis to energy efficiency. Students will be assessed by a theoretical test, problem solving and by doing an assignment on the installation of electricity in an industrial facility. This assignment has to comprise schemes and the decisions that had been made have to be justified. Calculations and the materials that had been used have also to be referred in the assignment.

Learning outcomes and competences

Knowledge bases of lighting technique (eg what is the light, the light spectrum and light engineering units), operating principle and characteristics of different types of lamps and lighting equipment, knowledge of lighting design for interior and management of a lighting installation, taking into account energy efficiency and the fundamental bases for conducting electricity project of an industrial installation.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Power Systems and conducting electricity project of an industrial installation

Program

Principles of illuminating engineering Types of lamps: main characteristics and applications Classes of lamps energy efficiency Dimensioning of illumination circuits Types of ballasts and interior illumination management Use of installation bus EIB/KNX Calculation methods for interior illumination installation, public illumination installation and illumination of large areas Calculation software Natural illumination Security illumination Interior and exterior illumination reinforcements Energy efficiency in illumination installation Industrial facilities: typology and dimensioning of industrial networks Types of ducts Differential devices: characteristics, dimensioning and applications Neutral point connection Driving force Functions of electrical switchgear Circuit breakers: structure, categories and protection selectivity Ground systems Harmonic distortion

Mandatory literature

D.C. Pritchar; Lighting. ISBN: 10: 0582357993

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical classes will be based on the presentation of the themes with support of transparencies and on the presentation of case studies. Practical classes will be based on two projects, one using the Dialux e the other the Ulysses. This assignment has to comprise a report, in which the decisions that had been made have to be justified. Calculations, technical characteristics of materials that had been used have also to be referred in the report.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Exame 50,00
Trabalho escrito 50,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

Designation Time (hours)
Elaboração de projeto 20,00
Estudo autónomo 30,00
Frequência das aulas 60,00
Total: 110,00

Eligibility for exams

Students cannot exceed the limit of class absences. Finish the two assigments on time.

Calculation formula of final grade

MARK= 0, 5 x (mark of the group assignment) + 0, 5 x (mark of the exam). Minimum the 40% in the exam and in each of the assigments.

Examinations or Special Assignments

Complete the two projects that form the distributed evaluation on time.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Same as the students 'normal'. These situations do not exempt the completion of the evaluation continues. The work must be performed in the same time for students to "normal". Students may only submit to examination with assessment rating distributed.

Classification improvement

Final exam. The classification of distributed evaluation component is valid for all exam periods of the school year.

Observations

The softwares DIALUX and ULYSSES will be used by the students
