Objectives

After being approved in this course unit, students should be capable of:

 

 

 

- identifying the basic principles of the time value of money, the structure of the main tools of financial analysis, and their integration to support a financial analysis of investment projects;

 

 

 

- developing financial projections and accurately analyze simple investment projects;

 

 

 

- organizing and managing complex projects, with the support of adequate computer-based tools;

 

 

 

- having an integrated vision of operations in organizations, in terms of concepts, techniques and strategies, and being able to identify and approach problems, using quantitative methods for their resolution.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Learning outcomes and competences

The competences to be acquired by the students, as well as the results of the learning process, derive directly from the satisfaction of the indicated objectives.

1. Time value of money. 

Fundamental notions of accounting and financial analysis. Future value. Present value. Annuities. Annuity-immediate and annuity-due. Varying annuities. IRR (Internal Rate of Return) and NPV (Net Present Value). Nominal and effective interest rates. Amortization schedule. Use of Excel Spreadsheets. 

 

2. Assessment of investment projects. 

Analysis components: investment characterization, income statement forecast, net cash flows, net salvage value, and evaluation tools. Building models with Excel spreadsheets. Importance of the assessment of investment projects, project types, structure of the analysis, estimation of cash flows, decision rules – payback period, immediate payback, NPV, IRR, modified IRR, projects with different timelines. Examples. Uncertainty and options. Cost-benefit analysis and multi-criteria analysis. 

 

3. Project management.

 

Project organization and management: CPM method and extensions; resource management; project planning and control. 
Information systems for Project Management; applications. 



 

4. Operations Management.

Strategic importance of Operations Management. 
Activities and scope of Operations Management: manufacturing and services companies. 
Main activities and methodologies for planning, executing and controlling production activities. Just-in-Time. Industrial layouts and production line balancing. Aggregate production planning and capacity management. Material Requirements Planning (MRP); lot-sizing. Operations scheduling. An integrated vision on Operations Management.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Classes will be used to introduce the program topics, present and discuss cases, and solve small illustrative problems.
Some sessions may be occupied with student presentations and subsequent discussion.

A (assignment about topic 1 of the program) - 0 to 20 points (mínimo 7.5)

C = 0.75 FE + 0.25 A

Examinations or Special Assignments

FE - final exam, closed book

A - assignment, to be done in groups of 2 students

(the assignment assessment may include a brief discussion session)

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Evaluation identical to normal case.
All students must deliver the assignment in the established date.

Classification improvement
