Objectives

This course aims at providing the sudents with the necessary skills to perform the following tasks: analysis of feedback systems with static nonlinear elements; analysis of state space systems in continuous and discrete time; controller/observer synthesis; analysis of systems with stochastic inputs (after having acquired basic knowledge about stochastic processes).

Learning outcomes and competences

After this course the students should be able to:

Model processes using state space realizations

Construct complex controllers using the state space approach.

Apply their knowledge to the solution of interdisciplinary problems that involve their area of specialization.

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

Designation Time (hours)
Estudo autónomo 108,00
Frequência das aulas 54,00
Total: 162,00

Eligibility for exams

Students must participate at least in 75% of the exercise classes.
Moreover, they must obtain a minimum grade of 3.0 out of 20 in the midterm.

Calculation formula of final grade

Normal regime:
Final grade = max[40% (midterm grade)+60%(final examination); final examination]

Other regimes:
Final grade = Final examination grade

Examinations or Special Assignments

In order to obtain a final grade above 18/20 (i.e., 19 or 20), the students must be submitted to a special (oral or written) exam, that will take place after the end of the re-sit examination period. The students in these conditions will have their names properly highlighted on the results sheet posted after the second exam sitting.

Obtaining a final classification superior to 18 marks (19 or 20) demands for a special exam that will be done after the end of the re-sit examination period. The students in these conditions will have their names properly highlighted on the results’ sheet posted after the written exams. The exams to be done by the students in the special examination period (item 5 of Article 6 in the General Evaluation Rules) can be oral exams, in which case they will be previously noticed.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

The students admitted to the exam for being dismissed from frequency (under the items a), b) and c) of Article 4 of the General Evaluation Rules) will do, on the regular examination period, the same exam as the ordinary evaluation students.

Classification improvement

Classification improvement can be done accordingly to item 1 of Article 10 of General Evaluation Rules. This means it can be done if the student, within the established deadlines, enrolls on the re-sit exam of the regular period in which he obtained approval or (exclusively) on one of the tests of the regular period of the following year.

Observations
