Objectives
The Composite Materials course comes after the students get to know materials (mainly metals, but also polymers and ceramics) and manufacturing technologies, plus the Strength of Materials related matters. It is give in the sense to give the students the will to create new materials, new products and new processes, as Composite Materials represent a permanent challeng to our imagination
Generic Objectives
To give the basic notions of mechanical behaviour of composite materials and its specificities
To introduce the concepts and theories associated with th e design of composite systems and structures
To introduce the processing techniques and notions for the quality control with Composite Materials
Specific Aims:
To acuquaint the stidents with the specificity of Composite materials of Polymeric matrix, their anisotropic nature and easiness to tailor the properties according to the application
PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE
The students are supposed to have knowledge of properties and processing methidologies related to polymeric materials, as well as backgroung on Solid Mechanics, particularly generalized Hooke's law
PERCENTUAL DISTRIBUTION
It is expected that a student spend 162 h per semester dedicatedto this course, distributed as follows:
28 h presence in teorethical/practical classes
28 h presence tp make practical work
28h literature search
28h preparation, elaboration, presentation and discussion of report
46h study
4h exams
Learning Outcomes:
At the end of th ecourse, the students are expected::
- to know the main resins and finbres, as well as semi-products for the production of composite materials
- to identify the main parameters of differnt manufacturing processes and to be able to make a selection and evluation of technologies
- to conceive and design simple products based on composite materials
- to be able to prepare a quality control procedure for those materials
