Objectives
General chemistry:
Consolidation of basic chemical concepts previously acquired by the students. Study of chemical bonding and molecular geometry and their relation to the macroscopic behaviour of the different states of matter (gases, liquids and solids).
Organic chemistry
Recognizing and representing organic molecules; knowing the reactivity of organic compounds and proposing strategies of organic compound synthesis from simpler molecules.
Program
General chemistry:
1. Brief survey of the basic concepts and calculations in chemistry.
2.Quantum theory and the electronic structure of atoms.
3.Chemical bonding.
4.Molecular shape and structure.
5. The properties of gases, liquids and solids.
Organis chemistry:
1.Carbon compounds and chemical bonds.
2.Representative carbon compounds and nomenclature.
3.Characteristic Reactions of Organic Compounds and Reaction Mechanism
4.Reactions of alkanes (radical substitution): bond-dissociation energies, radical halogenation and relative reactivity.
5.Stereochemistry: conformational analysis and stereoisomers.
6.Nucleophilic substitutions at saturated carbon: SN2 and SN1 mechanism, stereochemistry.
7.Elimination Reactions: E2 and E1 mechanism, elimination versus substitution.
8.Electrophilic additions to alkenes and alkynes. Polymerisation of alkenes.
