Objectives
This course unit aims to:
- familiar students with the role of Information Systems (IS) in organisations and the importance of meeting organisations’ strategy;
- familiar students with business models of digital economy;
- teach students how to make decisions in IS, mainly in the area of planning and IS management;
- train students in exploring IS concerning business analysis and knowledge management;
- broaden students’ knowledge in Database Management Systems, mainly in Unified Modeling Language (UML), relational model and SQL;
- endow students with skills to develop Web applications.

Information Technologies (IT) and Information Systems (IS); Technological evolution; distributed processing; computer networks; The Internet- historical evolution, world wide web protocols, available services, safety, communications, research and access to information; mobility (computing and the Internet); The future of the Internet
IT/IS infrastructures and investments; evolution of IT/IS in organisations, Nolan’s model; the role and importance of IS; IS dimensions; Types of IS – Transaction Processing Systems (TPS), Management Information Systems (MIS), Decision-Support Systems (DSS) and Executive Support Systems (ESS); Information Systems in organisations; Technical, functional and socio-organisational aspects.
The evolution of Information Systems in organisations- Materials Requirements Planning (MRP) and Manufacturing Resource Planning II (MRP II); Integrated Systems ERP – Enterprise Resource Planning: implementation, advantages, disadvantages, successful and unsuccessful cases; IS and chain values: Customer Relationship Management (CRM) Supply Chain Management (SCM); data and information treatment and analysis (Online Analytical Processing, Data Warehouses, Datamining)
Electronic business and electronic commerce (e-Business and e-Commerce); models of business and digital economy; electronic commerce – Business to costumer (B2C), Business to Consumer (B2C) and Costumer to Costumer (C2C); modeling and business processes (BSP, Swim Lane, IDEF, Unified Modeling language); Information architecture; information systems planning; stages information systems planning; strategic planning for information systems; decision making in IS (investment analysis, outsourcing/ internal development, etc)

Teaching methods and learning activities
Theoretical-practical classes will be based on the presentation of the program of the course unit and on discussion of cases. Practical classes will take place at the computer room, where students will have the chance to do exercises using computer tools and where group assignments will be supervised.

To be admitted to exams, students have to attend 75% of the classes.
Calculation formula of final grade
0.30x (1st Test) + 0.30x (2nd Test) + 0,4x (Practical assignment)
