Objectives

Thegoal is to introduce the theme of Environmental Acoustics providing strong theoretical basis in order to be able to understand all the phenomena involved and all actual and future legislation on this topic.

Learning outcomes and competences

This course unit aims to provide students with: - indispensable technical knowledge in Acoustics in order to understand and correctly apply Portuguese regulations in the area of Environmental Acoustics; - personal and professional skills, so that they can be efficient in the resolution of problem and basic experimentation in this area; - the necessary skills to conceive and design in this area.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Presentation (supported by audiovisual equipment) of concrete situations and applications. The presentation is followed (in practical classes) by problems, practical demonstrations of materials and equipments and application of the existing legislation (use of FEUP’s Laboratory of Acoustics).

Eligibility for exams

It will take place two exams with same level of difficulty (normal and resit season) after the conclusion of the semester. They are 3-hour long written exams: 1 h theoretical (closed book) and + 2h practical (open book but only the official text book). Students will only be admitted to exams if they attend classes in a regular basis. To be admitted to exams, students have to be enrolled in the course unit and cannot miss more than three practical classes. Students will be admitted to "recurso" (resit) exam, if they follow the above mentioned rules and if they failed or missed the exam at the normal season, unless they are improving their grades. Students under the line 3 of Article 4 of General Evaluation Rules of FEUP (military personnel, working students or students who attended classes in the previous academic year) are also admitted to exams.

Calculation formula of final grade

100% - exam (To have an excellent attendance record to classes will be a factor to increase slightly the final grade)

Observations

- During exams mobile phones are not allowed. - Attending theoretical and practical classes on a regular basis is an important factor to improve students’ grades. - Students are not allowed to enter the class 10 minutes after the class has started. - The attendance sheet is available up until 15 minutes after the class has started. Estimated weekly working time, out of classes: 3.5 hours
