Objectives

SPECIFIC AIMS:
This course unit aims to make students understand:
- the role of Information Systems (IS) in organisations and the importance of being aligned with organisations strategy;
- the concept of Information Systems Architecture (ISA) and its importance within organisations and whether ASI is able to develop the appropriate business strategy.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
- to acquire knowledge in business models in digital economy
- to be capable of making decisions in IS, chiefly in the area of IS planning and management
- to be capable of using IS in the aspects related to business analysis and knowledge management
- to understand the concept of Information Systems Architecture (ISA) and its importance within organisations
- to be acquainted with some frameworks and their practical application in ISA definition
- to be capable of using methods and tools to acquire different architectures involved in ISA (business, data, applications, technology)
- to be capable of developing an appropriate ISA to business necessities and strategy
- to contact with some trends of application development in order to help the exchange of information and interoperability (XML, Web Services, SOA, etc.)

Program

Introduction to the Architecture of Information Systems (ASI). Historical Evolution. The different approaches and definitions associated with the ASI.
Frameworks to support the acquisition of ASI (Zackman, Gartner Group, Model Index, ...). ASI Methodologies. The different architectures involved in the ASI. Business Architecture. Data Architecture. Applications Architectures. Architecture technology. Methods and tools to characterizer different architectures.
Exchange of information between applications (XML). Interoperability between applications (Web Services). Services oriented architecture (SOA).
