Objectives

The students should be able to:
Understand and describe the main aspects of generation, transmission, distribution, trade and use of electric energy, including the recent changes in the electric sector.
Calculate the electric parameters of lines, set the PI model and use it to analyze the different operating points.
Understand and explain the main aspects of the technical management of a power system and formulate and solve control problem at a basic level.
Formulate the power flow problem.
Use the p.u. system and the DC power flow model to solve network analysis problems.

Program

Energy. Energy sources. Electric energy. The Portuguese case. General structure of electric power systems. Load diagrams. Industrial generation of electric energy: the different types of power plants.
Transmission lines: technical aspects, electrical parameters and equations. Per unit system. Mathematical model of the electric power system. System behavior. Power flow calculations: general aspects and DC model.
The liberalized structure of the electric sector.
Rational use of electric energy: tariffs, reactive compensation, load management.
