Objectives

When students are facing an electrical or non-electrical measurement, they should be able to select, define and assess the measurement method, and the most adequate components, programs and equipments, as well as designing a chain of measurement or instrumentation system.

Skills
In order to achieve the above mentioned aim, students should develop the following skills:

Specific skills:
- To apply methods of assessment of measurement quality;
- To apply methods for measuring electrical quantities;
- To interpret the most important specifications of non-electrical quantities transducers;
- To know how to interpret and apply the specifications of the main components of a measuring chain, in particular the conditioning circuits and analogue-digital conversion;
- To project measuring chains in specific applications;
- To apply instruments and instrumentation systems in measurement problems and data acquisition;

Other skills:
- Experimental work (laboratory assignments)
- Teamwork
- Written, oral and multimedia skills

This course also aims to broaden students¿ knowledge in the domain of the professional and enterprise activity in Electrical Engineering (area of Measurement, Sensors and Instrumentation).

Eligibility for exams

- Laboratory classes are mandatory and subject to the regulations regarding the maximum number of allowable absences.

- If students miss an assignment (even if the absence is adequately justified) they have to do it in another time duly authorized by the professor and supervised by the technician responsible for the laboratory.

- Students have to attain a minimum mark of 50% in the laboratory work assessment for it to be considered completed.

Examinations or Special Assignments

The online tests will be conducted in Moodle, on dates, times and rooms to be advertised on Moodle.
The assessment of the laboratory work will focus on individual and group performance, in particular on the quality of reports and answers given to professor’s questions.
Each lab assignment will be performed by groups of two students.
In the last weeks of the semester, students organized in groups will undertake a project, that must be presented as a written article, subject to demonstration and oral evaluation.

Internship work/project

1

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Laboratory work is compulsory to all students. Students with a special status will also have a chance to do the assignments (at an adequate time for them). However, they will be assessed just like the other students.
