Objectives

To present the fundamentals of digital modulations and spread spectrum techniques.

Program

Topic 1: Bandpass transmission (digital modulations):
binary digital modulation techniques(PSK, FSK, ASK); coherent and noncoherent detection of PSK and FSK signals; DPSK; error probability in binary digital modulations; nonbinary digital modulations (MPSK, MFSK and QAM); symbol and bit error probabilities in MPSK, MFSK and QAM; spectral efficiency.
Topic 2: Spread Spectrum:
introduction and generic considerations; spread spectrum techniques: direct sequence (DS) and frequency hopping (FH); pseudo-random sequences (PN, Gold and Kasami sequences); multiple access (CDMA).

Mandatory literature

Haykin, Simon; Communication systems. ISBN: 0-471-17869-1
Sílvio A. Abrantes; Apontamentos de Telecomunicações 2, 2004
Sílvio A. Abrantes; Apontamentos de Espalhamento Espectral

Teaching methods and learning activities

- theory is presented in lecture classes;
- exercise solving and interaction with the teacher occur in theoretical-practical classes; students will be given a set of exercises to be solved in class and at home.
- Matlab/Simulink simulation work will be developed in 2-hour lab classes.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

Description Type Time (hours) Weight (%) End date
Subject Classes Participação presencial 56,00
Total: - 0,00

Eligibility for exams

Not to be absent more than the allowed number of times stated in "Normas de Avaliação".

Calculation formula of final grade

CF=0,35 x (MT1+MT2) + 0,3xAC

CF - final grade
MT1 and MT2 - mini-test grade
AC - continuous evaluation grade.
Continuous evaluation is accomplished during Lab Classes and is based on the student's performance on Lab work and reports.
To pass the course the average mini-test grade may not be lower than 35% of total grade (7 in 20).
