Objectives
The main aim of this course is to provide the students with basic qualification to analyze linear electric circuits, either D.C.C. or A.C.C. Given that this is the first course where these contents are studied in a systemized way, we chose a set of themes that may be a solid basis of knowledge, indispensable to every posterior course of electrical engineering.
Program
Analysis of D.C.C.: general concepts. Measurable quantities and fundamental electrical laws. Methods for Circuit Analysis. Coils and Capacitors. First order RL and RC circuits. Second order RLC circuits. Analysis of A.C.C.: General Concepts. Sinusoidal signals. The concept of phasor and phasor relationships for R, L and C elements. Impedances and admittances. Sinusoidal response. Power calculation in sinusoidal regime. Three phase circuits. Power calculation in three phase balanced circuits.

Teaching methods and learning activities
The teaching of this course is divided into three kinds of classes: theoretical, theoretical-practical and practical.
Theoretical classes: contents exposition, illustrated with examples as often as possible.
Theoretical-practical classes: problems resolution by the teacher.
Practical classes: These classes are coordinated and complement the theoretical-practical classes and aim the students’ resolution of suggested problems, as well as the clarification of doubts that those or any other problems may cause.

Eligibility for exams
To attain frequency the student cannot exceed the absence limit (25 % of both theoretical-practical and practical classes), must obtain a continuous evaluation result (AD) equal or superior to 1,0 mark and must deliver at least 5 sets of homework exercises correctly solved.
Calculation formula of final grade
The Final Classification (CF) results from a combination of the exam classification (AE) and the continuous evaluation classification (AD) using the following formula: CF = AE*(16/20) + AD.
The results equal or superior to 19 marks (out of 20) require an additional oral exam.
The continuous evaluation classification (AD) can reach a maximum of 4,0 marks, which corresponds to the sum of the 2 mini-tests’ results (MT1 and MT2), each with the value of 2,0 marks; these tests are individual, without consultation and will be done in theoretical classes in dates to be announced in class and on the web page of the course.
The students must also deliver 9 sets of homework exercises to be indicated, on a deadline to be defined. Those who don’t deliver the exercises solved will be penalized (PEN) 0,1 marks for each set not delivered.
The final classification of the continuous evaluation (AD) is obtained with AD = MT1 + MT2 – PEN.
Examinations or Special Assignments
There will be two mini-tests. Studens must solve 9 sets of homework exercises to be delivered on dates defined in the begining of the semester.
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
The students that are dismissed from frequency will be evaluated with a written test similar to the final exam that will be graded on a 0-20 scale.
Classification improvement
The classification improvement will be done with a written test similar to the exam that will be graded on a 0-20 scale. The continuous evaluation grade will not be taken into account in the calculation of this classification.
Observations
Evaluation of the students who attained frequency in 2004/2005: These students, will be evaluated under the same conditions as the ordinary students, except in regard to the final classification, which is calculated as the following: the final classification (CF1) is the result of CF1 = AE*(16/20) + AD1, where AD1 is the continuous evaluation classification of 2004/2005 and AE is the exam classification. The students who attained frequency in 2004/2005 and enroll on a theoretical-practical/practical class automatically lose the right to use the continuous evaluation classification of 2004/2005 and must attain frequency this year in order to have access to the final exam.
