Objectives

The goal of this course is to give students basic knowledge of linear algebra. They should also understand the notions of matrices and determinants and their use to solve systems of linear equations. Students should also acquire the concepts of vector spaces, and the related subjects of linear transformation and linear operator. The notions of eigenvalues and eigenvectors, and the diagonal form of a matrix are also considered.

Program

Algebraic Structures. Complex numbers: basic operations and representation notations. Matrices: definition; operations. Determinants: definition; properties. Linear equation systems: Cramer’s rule; Gauss elimination; homogeneous systems. Vector Spaces: definitions; subspaces; basis and dimension. Linear transformations: definitions; matrix representation; image and null spaces; change of basis. Eigenvalues and eigenvectors: similar matrices; invariants subspaces.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical classes consist on a formal exposition of the contents, followed by the presentation and discussion of examples. All the student’s doubts will be clarified in theoretical/ practical classes.
