Objectives

This course aims to endow students with an integrated vision of operations management in organisations, as far as concepts, techniques and strategies used are concerned.
Students should be capable of:
- Describing and explaining the different types of industrial organisation and services;
- Enumerating and explaining the main approaches, methods and tools in the area of operations management (product engineering, process, production, intra and inter enterprise logistics);
- Defining and specifying requirements for Information Systems and in the area of operations management;
- Assessing and applying solutions and computer tools in the area of operations management.

- Strategic importance of operations management;
- Activities in the area of operations management: industrial companies and services;
- Designing and development of products;
- Characterization and organisation of processes and production flows;
- Quality and quality management;
- Activities and methodologies in the planning, execution and control of production activities;
- Materials management and MRP (Materials Requirements Planning);
- Flux production; Just-in-Time and Toyota production system;
- Principles of internal and external logistics;
- Technological support to operations management

Teaching methods and learning activities

1. Concepts, examples and practical-theoretical exercises are presented to students.
2. It will be studied real practical cases in the area of operations management.

Eligibility for exams

Students have to attend to theoretical and practical-theoretical classes (according to General Evaluation Rules of FEUP) and achieve a minimum mark of 40% in the group and individual assignments (students have to deliver at least 80% of the proposed assignments).

Calculation formula of final grade

Final Mark will be base on the average mark of the following components:
- Students’ participation in class: 10%
- Individual assignments: 15%
- Group assignments: 25%
- Written exam: 50%

Examinations or Special Assignments

Students have to do individual assignments (homework) during the semester;
Students have to do two group assignments (2 students):
a) critical analysis of an article of an international publication (or case study);
b) development of a technological solution (for example: Based on excel)

Special Assessment
Students with a special status can opt out to be assessed as ordinary students.
Otherwise, they have to:
- attend to a written exam which is worth 30% of the final mark;
- attend to an oral exam which is worth 20% of the final mark;
- present and discuss an individual practical assignment which is worth 50% of the final mark.

Classification improvement

Students can only improve the mark of their written exam.

Observations

Students will only complete the course if they attend to classes and if they achieve a minimum mark of 40% in the exam.
