Objectives

The course is focused on the study of Mass Transfer phenomena. The students should acquire here sound basic knowledge on: the physical and the mathematical description of the mass transfer mechanisms (diffusion and convection), the transport of a solute between phases in contact, the concept of individual and global mass transfer resistances, establishing mass balances for different cases/geometries in steady state and transient conditions, definition of appropriate boundary conditions, application of the acquired concepts to the design of some mass transfer equipment and developing the skill of problem solving.

Program

1 - Introduction - Mass Transfer mechanisms
2 - Mass transfer between contacting phases - Two- Resistance theory
3 - Mass transfer in simple unit operation equipment
4 - Generalization of the Fick Rate equation
5 - Correlations for the determination of mass transfer coefficients.
6 - Transient Diffusion

Teaching methods and learning activities

The theoretical concepts and mathematical description are given in the first two theoretical hours of each week during the whole semester. The third class in the week is devoted to the resolution of illustrative problems. An additional class (theoretical-practical class) of one hour per week is devoted to discuss with the students the solution of working problems (available at the beginning of the semester) solved by them. In these classes especial attention is devoted to the improvement of student’s problem solving ability.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Eligibility for exams

The students must do the proposed work (problem solving).

Calculation formula of final grade

Final evaluation (FV)

FV= 0,15 x CE + 0,85 x EF

0.15 x CE - 3 values (maximum)
0.85 x EF - 17 values (maximum)

Examinations or Special Assignments

The continuous evaluation consists in the resolution of two problems.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Final exam.

Classification improvement

Final exam

Observations

There is an on-line course in the FEUP's elearning system - platform LUVIT called «Fenómenos de Transferência II» with the syllabus, notes from the theorectical classes, groups of problems, exams from previous years, etc. and a student-teacher communication area.
