Objectives

To study the processing of polymer materials and the polymer industries settled in Portugal.

Program

Transformation of polymers and polymer-matrix composites: Thermoplastics: extrusion, blowing extrusion, spinning, thermoforming, calendaring, compression molding, injection molding.
Thermosets: Reaction Injection molding, rubber transformation. Particle agglomeration (wood, cork), composite materials. Polymers and Fine Chemistry: coatings, adhesives, detergents, thickeners and applications with optical and electrical properties.

Mandatory literature

Middleman, Stanley; Fundamentals of polymer processing. ISBN: 0-07-041851-9
Berins, Michael L. 340; Plastics engineering handbook. ISBN: 0-412-99181-0

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical classes are based on contents exposition accompanied by transparencies. Practical classes consist of a supervised resolution of problems that illustrate the contents. Both the question paper and the solutions are familiar to the students.
We will be doing several visits to enterprises of the various sectors approached in class, as well as seminars with the participation of people related to industry or investigation in those areas.
