Objectives
Students should acquire a set of essential skills in the area of Clinical Engineering, namely in Clinical Environment and Hospital Safety.
Students should be capable of identifying problems in the area of Clinical Engineering and Hospital Safety and applying the acquired technical knowledge in the planning and analysis to solve those problems. Students should be also capable of performing assessment activities.
Program
• Electrical, electronic and electromagnetic safety:
Physiological effects of electric current; Solutions for electrical and electronic safety in a medical environment; The problematic of electromagnetic safety; Regulations; Specific aspects of the design of electrical systems.
• Fire safety:
Criteria and rules to design installations and specific systems of fire safety; Intervention in case of accidents; Regulations;
• Chemical and biological safety:
Presentation of the various problems that may be caused by chemical and biological contamination and safety risks; Presentation of techniques and solutions for specific intervention.
• Clinical environment acoustics:
Presentation of the fundamental aspects of comfort and adequacy of acoustic conditioning and rules to its practical utilisation in the diverse clinical environments; Paradigmatic cases (oral communication in operation theatres and intensive care units).
• Accessibility and communications:
The problem of access to the facilities and communication technologies, telecommunication and teleinformatics of clinical personnel and patients; The problem of communication and telecommunication of patients with disabilities and the elderly and corresponding solutions.
• Environmental Control and Air Conditioning
Physical comfort (atmosphere conditioning humidity, temperature and purity). Integration of those processes to the ones related to lighting, communication and specific accessories used by hospital personnel and patients.

Calculation formula of final grade
Final Grade will be based on two components which are worth the same:
1. An open book exam
2. A written assignment in the form of a scientific paper on a theme approved by the professors, as mentioned in “Teaching Procedures”.
Examinations or Special Assignments
A written assignment in the form of a scientific paper on a theme chosen by the students.
The assignments have to be presented in a public session and will later be published in a record.
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
The same rules as for regular students.
Classification improvement
Resit.
Students can only improve the grade of their assignments on the following academic year.
